Sherwood Marathon and Marathon Relay

South County, RI, May 19, 2001

Overall Results

The First Annual Sherwood Marathon and Marathon Relay was held in South County, Rhode Island on Saturday, May 19, 2001. This new event attracted over 200 participants, some from as far away as California and Canada. While most of the entrants were marathon runners, a number of relay teams also participated, as did a small group of marathon walkers.

The point-to-point course (USATF Certification No. RI01005RN) features the greatest elevation drop of any marathon in New England, with a starting elevation of 535 feet above sea level and an ending elevation of 3 feet above sea level. Those are also the highest and lowest points on the course, which starts in Exeter, Rhode Island and finishes at Matunuck Town Beach in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, just steps from the ocean. Notwithstanding the elevation drop, the general post-race consensus among the inaugural participants was that this new marathon is by no means an easy race, with plenty of rolling terrain to test the fitness level of every runner.

The top three men all broke three hours. David Audet, 36, of Concord, NH, came home in 2:50:02. Next in was Chris Schulten, 29, of Branford, CT, who finished in 2:56:45, followed by Michael Bowen, 33, of Newport, RI, in a time of 2:58:52. First male master was Michael Kerin, 42, of Milford, CT. Michael was 4th overall in 3:01:00.

Top female honors go to Barbara McManus, 33, of Worcester, MA, who arrived in Matunuck in 3:20:28 and claimed 9th place overall. Barbara was followed by Patrycja Missiuro of Waltham, MA, in 3:36:40, and Kathy Lindh of Brockton, MA, in 3:38:10.

The top relay team was composed of Karen Schroeder, Kim Tobin, Tobias Hogan, and Karin Koehn, all of Boston, MA. Karen and friends finished the trek in 3:09:31, followed by a team made up of four women all in their 30's - Maureen Bellamy, Kim Magnelli, Amy Hartnet, and Jennifer Medeiros. The Bellamy team finished up in 3:17:12.

Partial race results appear below. Complete results will be posted as soon as possible. The Sherwood Marathon and Marathon Relay will be held next year on Saturday, May 11, 2002. Online registration will be available soon.
