Lake McMurtry 50K/25K Trail Runs

Weather is my big worry in this race and with the meteorologists forecasting "gorgeous", I was still worried. But it turned out great, no flooding or tornadoes, low temp's in the 60's and a high around 88 F, a bit hot for the runners but great for the rest of us.

The 50 km record of 3:48 might suggest this is a fast course, but it is not. The trail twists, turns and rolls although there are no long climbs. As well this tends to be the first hot race of the year for most entrants and despite all the ice and cold liquids we serve the last 7.5 miles can take forever. Numerous runners took advantage of the 7:00 A.M. early start option.

Tim Albrecht, drove up from Lufkin, TX and entered on race day to win the 50 km, taking both the first overall male prize and the first master male in 4:56:26. Megan Barton, in only her second ultra, took the overall female prize in a time of 5:39:03 for 50 km.

In the 25 km run, Chris Zingarelli took nearly 3 minutes off his 1999 pace to win the overall male award in 2:00:04. Brett Tashiro, of Lawton, OK won the male masters division with a time of 2:20:03. Jennifer Hopper of Norman, OK won the overall female award in 2:23:20. The first master female in the 25 km, for the second year in a row was Gail Leedy of Topeka, KS in 2:26:52.

There was 24 starters and 22 finishers in the 50 km trail run and 23 starters and 22 finishers in the 25 km event. This is about half of our usual numbers since the Inaugural Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon the following day was drawing off the local runners.

Winners received custom-designed bowls courtesy of Brookside Pottery, Tulsa Oklahoma, (918) 747-7574. All finishers received LMTR commerative coasters from Coasterworks, Stillwater, OK.

The post-race barbecue with Chuck's Jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, pop and brownies was again a success. The vegetarian entree, a mushroom and barley soup disappeared completely. We'll try it again next year.

This race wouldn't be possible without a lot of help and I'd like to thank Chuck Streit, Susan Himes, Mike and Julie Kelly, Jim Flesher, Dan Zeroski, Stillwater Parks and Recreation and the Lake Ranger, Roger Bastion.

The next Lake McMurtry Trail Run is scheduled for April 13th, 2002. This will be 15 days before the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.
