Janet Robertz Wins Avon Running 10K in Minneapolis

$5,100 presented to Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation to help fight women's heart disease

MINNEAPOLIS - (Aug. 11, 2001) - Masters runner Janet Robertz, of Shorewood, Minn., captured the overall Avon Running-Twin Cities 10K title today with a winning time of 34:56. Robertz, 41, who made her racing debut at last year's Avon 10K in the Twin Cities by placing third overall and first masters, was one of 22 women to run under 40 minutes in the 6.2 mile race.

Second place went to Kris Ihle, 32 of Racine, Wis., in 35:21 and third was posted by JoAnna Deeter, 23, Minneapolis in 36:15. The masters winner and fourth place overall was Debbie Leyden, 40, St. Paul with a time of 36:29.

Robertz won $500 in prize money and an expense-paid trip to Phoenix, Ariz., for the 2001 Avon Running National Championship on Dec. 9. Leyden also receives an expense-paid trip to the National Championship as the first masters runner since Robertz won the open division.

Diana Ostrander, 42, Andover, Minn., was the winner of the Avon representative division and will travel to Phoenix for the championship race as well.

Some 1,300 women and children registered for the Avon Walking and Running event, which included a 10K run, a 5K walk/run and a kids' fun run at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. The Twin Cities site is part of the Avon Running circuit, which includes events in eight U.S. cities and 14 countries.

The top three finishers in the 5K, all from Minnesota, were Michelle Oman, 27 of New Ulm in 18:18; Carla Shuck, 28 of Anoka in 19:40; and Rachel Cameron, 14 of Grand Rapids in 19:44.

The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, the charitable beneficiary for Avon Running-Twin Cities, received a check for $2,500 from the Avon Products Foundation. The heart foundation, which is an independent, not-for-profit, community-based research and education organization founded in 1982 by the physicians of the Minneapolis Heart Institute, also received $2,600 from race proceeds.
