Despite National Tragedy, Race Goes On

South Carolina Transplant Kessinger Leads A Talented Field

"We felt bringing runners together to compete was the best solution," rather than cancel the race, meet director Jim Knost said as he addressed those at the starting line. The numbers were way down for the Metro Harriers Cross Country Challenge #2 dubbed "The Herring Run," but a competitive field showed up. The weather was perfect, 70 degrees and sunny, for this classic course that has been Baltimore City's main cross country racing ground since 1947.

John Kessinger, recently relocated to Baltimore from South Carolina, led wire to wire over the 3.1 mile course in 21:32. Second place went to Northeast High School harrier Ryan Williams, one of the favorites to win the upcoming Anne Arundel County Championship, who finished in 21:39. Caleb Karpay (Park School) claimed third in 21:52.

Tim Wehrkamp (Oregon T.C.) moved through the field to finish an impressive fourth in 21:57 (First Master). He will compete later in the season at the National Masters XC Championships in upstate New York. Northeast cross country and track coach Jack Alcombright rounded out the top five in 22:10. Alcombright also won the pole vault at the recent Metro Harriers Track & Field Championships with an 11 foot 6 inch effort.
