11th Annual Duckworth Relays

- - Jim Carbary

The Steve Duckworth Relays 5k celebrated its 10th anniversary last Saturday when 121 runners turned out for the race at Glenelg High School. In addition to this "adult" race, 171 elementary school children participated in an accompanying one-mile fun run. The school with the most participants received a Duckworth Banner to display for one year. Youth beat age in the men's 5k race. Thirty-eight-year-old Leslie Wright of Kettering, MD, seized the early lead in the 5k and at first seemed likely to win, but Seth Kampf from Ellicott City passed him near the turn-around at 1.5 miles. Only 16 years old, Seth had never been in the lead before and "started running scared because I didn't want to lose." He didn't. He pulled even further ahead in the final mile, ending the race by sprinting around the Glenelg track to win in 16:49.

Unfortunately, only the first nine runners received accurate times, because a time machine was misplaced just after the first runners had begun finishing. The finish line crew did preserve the order of the finishers, but left the winner of the women's 5k, master runner Valerie Guilfoil, with an uncertain time. "At my age, I'm not running for time," she confided. "I just want my legs to feel good."

Runners streamed across the finish line bemoaning the inordinately slow times on the uncorrected clock. To correct the clock times, finish line personnel enlisted the aid of various runners who carried watches and timed themselves. "It seemed slow to me anyway," said Tunde Morakinyo, who had set a personal 5k record of 18:59 two weeks before and failed to come close in this race. Of particular note was the performace of 62-year-old John Elliott of Columbia. Mr. Elliott finished sixth overall in an amazing time of 19:13.

The finish order was certain in spite of uncertain times, and the overall race winners received huge trophies. Age group winners won large Duckworth Relays sweatshirts and ribbons. All participants received multi-color t-shirts and all the bagels and bananas they could eat. The 1-Mile Fun run saw Clemmon's Crossing once again take home the Duckworth Banner for most participants, although Waterloo Elementary may have had the fastest runners as Waterloo's Tiffany Lang, Rachel Carbary, and Caitlin Fox all took home age group awards.

The Duckworth 5k, Fun Run, and a high school track meet that immediately follows the races, memorialize Steve Duckworth, former Howard County High School Director of Athletics, who died in 1991. In cooperation with the Howard County Schools Athletics Program, the Duckworth 5k and fun runs are staged every year by the Howard County Striders. In her fifth season, Barbara Calvert directed the races, with the support of the Howard County Police and a number of Strider volunteers. Princeton Sports of Columbia sponsored the event.
