8th Annual Louise Rossetti Race and 80th Annual Louise Rossetti
By Janet Montgomery and Aileen Mason
June 20, 2001 -- The eighth annual Louise Rossetti Women's Race/Walk was held
at Lynch Park in Beverly, MA with a 5K race and a 2-mile walk (see Results). Over 300
women walked or ran to support the cause of aiding families of murder
victims. The Rossetti family lost Suzanne Rossetti to murder in 1981 and have
worked to raise money to help others who have lost loved ones.
The race was won by Lisa Senatore, 37, of North Chelmsford, in a time of
18:14, well off Maggi Murray's 1996 course record of 16:54 and her own 1998
winning time of 17:10. Senatore runs for Whirlaway Racing Team, based in
Methuen, MA. The Whirlaway team claimed 7 of the top 10 spots and the team
win.
Louise Rossetti is well-known and well-beloved in New England road-racing
circles, and last year competed in 154 races. Her most recent race was up
Mt Washington, 7.6 miles base to summit with an average 12% slope. The
temperature was one of the warmest in the race history (near 90 at bottom,
70 at top of mountain). The humidity was high as well resulting in poor
air quality. But Louise triumphed over the mountain.
On June 28 at 7 pm, Louise will celebrate her 80th birthday
with friends and admirers at Khoury's State Spa, 118 Broadway, Somerville,
MA at the weekly 4.13 mile run with the Somerville Road Runners. Please
join us! Louise is an inspiration to us all, and we're all looking forward
to seeing her set records in her new age group.
