by Brian Noyes and Beth Kenney

3rd Annual Marshfield Youth Biathlon October 7, 2001

The 3rd Annual Marshfield Youth Biathlon began on a typical "autumn in New England" day - bright sun, crisp weather, brilliant foliage. Newcomers and returning athletes readied the bikes in the transition area and then lined up for the 9:00 am start.

Boys and girls ages 12-15 went off in the first wave to begin the 1/2 mile run, 5 mile bike, 1/2 mile run biathlon. Seven minutes later boys and girls ages 8-11 took off on the same course to complete 1/2 mile run, 2.5 mile bike, 1/2 mile run. The scenic course began at the Celtic Knot in the Green Harbor section of Marshfield, Ma and traversed a loop that was filled with volunteers directing traffic, handing out water and assisting in transition.

The awards ceremony was held inside the Celtic Knot where athletes and volunteers were treated to pizza and Shirley Temples provided by the restaurant. All division winners received Gift certificates from New Balance and each athlete received a finisher's medal and a race bag with a t-shirt, Triathlete magazines, Power Bars and other goodies.
