FTC Friday Night Five

Falmouth, MA, March 30, 2001

Friday Night Fivers Outrun SUV

by Ken Gartner

It was a warm 49 degrees and the rain was letting up. That was the good news for the Friday Night runners. The bad news was that there were humongous thigh high puddles out on Walker Street and Surf Drive. It was possible to skirt around some of the puddles, but for others there was simply no alternative but to wade through them or swim across them.

All seven of the thin wiry runners proved to be more rugged and durable than the dark green 4-wheel drive SUV which was stranded in the middle of a large puddle on Walker Street. While the runners made it through unscathed, the SUV required a tow to get to dry land.

Greg Stone picked a rough day to make his Friday night debut. Stone used to be one of the top distance runners on Cape Cod many years ago before he was slowed by a series of frustrating injuries. Now on the comeback trail, he negotiated the course with Matt Plant as the two finished in second place. The rain didn't deter Friday Night regular, Mike Garry. Garry posted his first ever top five finish with a time of 43:05. Monica Hough took the women's race for the second straight week with a time of just over 40 minutes.

The Friday Night Five is held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are welcome to participate. With the changing of the clocks there will be no need for reflective vests until next fall.
