Emerging Spring & Daylight Bring Out Twentry-one Runners for the Friday Night Five
by Ken Gartner
It was warm and sunny and probably the best night for running since last fall. Twenty-one runners lined up for the pre Saint Patrick's Day edition of the Friday Night Five. There probably would have been many more except for the fact that this was a very busy weekend for road racing in New England. There were races in New Bedford, Holyoke, Somerville, Nantucket, and Oak Bluffs which some of the Friday Night regulars were resting up for.
Penny Christo made a strong bid to become the second woman to ever win the Friday Night Five out-right, as she bolted out to an early lead and finished just 2 places short. With a time of 36:29, she edged out Jeff Hamilton by half a step and ended up third over-all. Monica Hough didn't lose much speed after her long winter lay off and she finished second for the women in a time of just over 40 minutes.
Poor Bob Crowley, for the second time in as many years he crossed the line first only to find out later another runner had run earlier in the day with a time faster than his. Had he known this ahead of time he most certainly would have run much faster and may have even claimed the victory.
The Friday Night Five is held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event, and all runners are welcome to participate.
