The "Coffee O" Five (Formerly The FTC Friday Night Five)

Falmouth, MA, June 29, 2001

Pollema Takes First; "Coffee O" Five Is Growing Every Week

by Ken Gartner

It was 76 degrees on Friday night and it was probably the best running night of the week. It was the largest "Coffee O" Five field of the year, as 52 runners crossed the line this week. Due to the large field, Courtney Bird raced down to provide emergency support to the Elm Road water stop.

It was the strongest women's field of the year, with five women under 38 minutes this week. Sarah Pollema of Duluth, Minnesota, was the first woman finisher. Ms. Pollema, who is working at MBL this summer, ran 34:08 in her "Coffee O" Five debut. Marjorie Wainright, a talented Falmouth High harrier, finished a minute later with her father right on her heels. Kathleen Savage edged Stace Beaulieu for third place.

The top five men all finished within 12 seconds of each other in a very tight race. Bob Crowley led the way in 30:28, which was identical to last weeks winning time turned in by Jeff List. Steve Faluotico bested Pete Sampson and MIke Norton by one second to take third place. Sixth place finisher, Mike Ouimet ran a personal best time, as did Steve Brocklebank.

Rick Rizzatano was a welcome sight at the starting line this week. Mr. Rizzatano's last run was nine weeks ago at the "Coffee O" Five where he had a very good race. He was injured in a bad bicycle accident the following day and has been recuperating since then. Although he is not up to running yet, he was able to hobble around Town Hall Square on his crutches and greet his many running friends.

The "Coffee O" Five is held every Friday night at 5:30 PM from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners are invited to participate.
