Uncomfortable Running Conditions Fail to Deter Big Field
by Ken Gartner
It was another tough night for a run. It was 83 degrees and very humid, but 50 runners showed up to fight the elements. It was not a night for personal best times. Monica Hough was kept very busy doling our water at the Elm Road water stop. The water in the worlds largest cooler, supplied by Coffee Obsession at the finish line, was also quickly quaffed by the hot thirsty runners.
The lead pack stayed together this week for almost three miles, as the pace started out kind of slow. Jeff List was the first to cross the line this week, as he garnered his first Coffee-O win of the year. He entered Town Hall Square in a dead heat for first, but unleashed a potent finishing kick to grab a two second win. He catapulted across the line with his knees pumping furiously and his arms flapping wildly. He didn't look all that smooth, but as the finish line fans all agreed, he sure was moving fast.
Last weeks winner, Steve Faluotico, edged Michele Bianchini for third. Mike Ouimet, who is training hard for the upcoming Cape Cod Marathon, took fifth. Luc Claessens faded to sixth after a strong mid-race surge.
There was yet another first time winner in the women's race. This week it was Julie Christian of Brewster who led the women. She finished strongly with a time of 34:31, while her three children cheered her on. Kathleen Savage took second, and Kris Tholke third, as both women cracked 40 minutes on a very tough night.
The Coffee-O-Five is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are welcome to participate. A nice cool night is predicted for next week.
