Critzer Tops Field in Coffee-O Five
by Ken Gartner
It was hot and hazy and very humid for this weeks Coffee-O Five. It was almost like running in a sauna out there. Only 32 runners took part this week, which is about 50 per cent less than a normal Friday night field. Some runners were probably deterred by the oppressive weather and threatening thunder showers, while many others were home resting for Sunday's Falmouth Road Race.
Duncan Smith-Rohrberg seemed unconcerned about saving any energy for Sunday's race, as he bolted out to an early lead. He was quickly reeled in by Eric Critzer, who trotted on to a 20 second win over Mike Norton. Norton started out slow, but picked off several runners in the final two miles.
Adam Polakowski, bounced back after a late Thursday night race in Centerville, to take third place in a time of just over 30 minutes. Stephen Olenick of Maryland, one of the many running Olenicks, finished sixth.
Sally Rohan of Holyoke was the first woman to finish, as she made her Coffee-O-Five debut. She ran sporting the team jersey of the Quarterdeck Racing Team, and is Coach Leonard's first female recruit to run for the infamous QD racers. Maryann Rowan took second, with Susi Wallace taking third.
The Coffee-O Five is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee, and all runners are invited to participate in this self timed event.
