WINNERS OF THE MAUI TACOS 5K
The fifth annual Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk was held on Saturday,
March 17 along a course that began and finished at Whalers Village in
Kaanapali.
James Sheremeta of LaJolla, California was the first to cross the
finish line. His time was :15:40. Last year, Sheremeta placed fourth
overall in the Maui Marathon. Gary Fanelli of Oakland, California finished
second in :16:20. Fanelli placed third in last year's Maui Tacos 5K with a
time of :16:37 and still holds the fastest time for the 30-39 age division
of the Maui Marathon, 2:31:09 in 1990. John Bogen of Flagstaff, Arizona
placed third overall in this year's Maui Tacos men's division with a time
of :17:24.
Allison Deckert of Seattle Washington was the first female finisher
with a time of :17:35 followed by Joanne Templeman of Tacoma, Washington in
:18:19. Stephanie Schnakenberg of Tucson, Arizona took third place with a
time of :18:45.
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third place finishers
overall and in the following divisions: 5 and under; 6-11, 12-19, 20-29,
30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.
The field of 639 entrants, 60% female, came from 33 states and six
countries. The youngest entrant, four-year-old Kiwa Miiyazaki of Japan
finished the race in :59:38 giving her second place in the 5 and under
female age division five-year old Taylor Trout of Lahaina. The oldest
entrant was 81-year oldYoshito Kobatake of Japan who finished in :52:42.
