Saturday, April 14, Earth Day 2001 was celebrated, by 100 runners and walkers, one week early, with a 5K run/walk on the Navy Mole Pier. Concerns for too much wind on the Mole pier were unfounded as participants basked in the 8 AM sun and warmth of a Keys Spring day. Key West Southernmost Runner Robyn Hughes led the women to finish as first female runner in 20:32. The overall Men's winner was Dan Kleiman from New York city running a 18:22, followed by 2nd 0verall Mens and Masters fist place winner Michael Bailey in 19:10. Michael is from Ocean City NJ but is a member of the Key West Southernmost Runners and has been enjoying our outstanding weather for the last few weeks. Big Pine KWSR Pat Kersy took the honors for in the Women's Masters division in 24:38. Most runners were from the Keys but another New Yorker, Kerry Ann Fitzgerald took second place overall for the women and first in the 20-29 age group. Young women runners Tyler Buckheim and Amanda Michaels finished first and second in the 13 and under age group. Taylor and Scott Tekesky came in shoulder to shoulder to finish 1-2 in the mens 13 and under age group. For the Walkers Cheri Kenyon took first in the women's category in 36:20 with Jay Rylander taking the Men's in 48:23. The participants all appreciated the efforts of Clean Florid Keys and Key West Southernmost Runners for Coordinating this event, as well as Croissants de France for the eatable awards, Coca Cola for water and all the Volunteers worked hard to make this a quality event. The cause was to support Clean Florida Keys and its programs to designate US-1 as a Scenic Highway and be eligible for Federal and State funding. These funds will provide the resources necessary to fulfill the dream of the Overseas Heritage Trail, The Key's extension of a Pedestrian and Bike path from Maine to Key West.
