Somok, Gancher win Mid Summer
Championship
Former Pomperaug star Kevin Somok runs
Roxbury about once a year. That is the same thing as saying he
wins Roxbury about once a year. By the half mile point, only second
place finisher Chris Bacich could see him. By the mile, even he couldn't
see the red jersey with the big P on the front as it disappeared around the
curves of the hilly Squire Road course.
First place was sewn up early, but it was an
exciting race for second place. Bacich had a solid lead on fellow New
Milfordite Andy Morehouse, but Andy chipped away at that lead and caught him
late in the race. Bacich looked dead until the finish line came into
sight, when he came alive again and dumped poor Andy by a margin of just six
seconds.
Kyle Gancher handily won the Women's race,
though her 43 second margin wasn't as decisive as Kevin Somok's. It sure
is easier to do those hills when you're not pushing the stroller, isn't
it?
This week's photo is of last week's
race, Al Mletzko and Carl Hunt sprinting towards the finish line.
This week it wasn't so close, as Al clobbered Carl by two places and 44
seconds. There's always next week, Carl. But not the week
after. That's the New Milford race.
The Roxbury Races are
now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.

This course is so hilly, though, that you'd be a minute and a half faster on a
flat five miler, Nora!
