This Hartford Track Club Winter Series race honors Joe Vailonis, a beloved Club member who was known as a man of smiles. He competed in the sixty-and-over division in many area races and was very supportive of other runners. An award was given to the oldest man and to the oldest woman to finish the race. This year's winners were George Brown and AnnMarie DeMonte.
For this year's race, the conditions were quite good for January 1 in Connecticut. The temperature was about thirty degrees Fahrenheit, and the paved course in the beautiful Metropolitan District Commission reservation was freshly plowed with just a thin layer of compacted snow remaining on the pavement.
This 10-K race uses a 3.3-mile loop, and several people stopped at 5-K. One of them was a man who identified himself as "Maddog Fanning, M62, Burlington." He indicated he ran 36:58 for 5-K.
Bill Katz was the race director, and I, David Reik, was his technical assistant. For those interested in the technical aspects of timing a small race with minimal personnel, I have included all the information from the prenumbered placecards I had the finishers fill out. The number in the first column is the placecard number. The time in the third column is the time from our Seiko handheld printing timer. The time in the fifth column is the time the runner wrote in the space on the card marked "Time you heard." (I yelled out times as the runners crossed the line.) The time in the sixth column is the time the runner wrote in the space marked "Time from your watch." These supplementary times are very helpful if the printing timer malfunctions. They also help ensure that runners are assigned the correct time from the printing timer; the list of times from the timer can get out of sync with the list of finishers if an extra time is recorded or if a finisher is missed by the person operating the timer.
