2001 Roxbury Race #8 - 2.4M
Roxbury, CT, April 14, 2001

South African student crushes largest field
ever
Simon Evans, from South Africa and now an aeronautical engineering student at
MIT, and his twin brother Antony turned up in Roxbury this week and gave a
running lesson. Simon won in a fast race, the first time in years that
three people have gone under 14 minutes in the same 2.4 mile race, and Antony
finished fourth in 14:04.
Simon took the race out fast with local journalist Dave Dunleavy right beside
him, Bob Molnar and Simon's brother Antony on their heels. As they came
down the big hill on Chalybes, though, Simon pulled out all the stops and
out-legged the field to pull away for what became a 15 second victory.
The women's race was also decided on the hill. Pam Quist enjoyed a
modest lead at the top of the hill, but by the time they got to the bottom,
Kimberly Thompson had passed Pam and put three or four people between
them. Pam, though, was patient and strong and almost made a come-back,
narrowing what had been a 15 second gap to just 4 seconds at the finish
line. Meanwhile Rapid Lynn Zuback was within sight of the action for the
whole race, but couldn't quite close the gap to join in. At the finish,
she was 49 seconds behind Thompson. That's Kimberly Thompson in the
picture.
The field of 55 runners was the largest field on record at Roxbury. The
previous record was 47, at a Spring Championship in the 1980's. Thanks to
Ken and April Neils and to Dave Harvey for working the finish line.
Without them, the results would be complete chaos.
On April 16, Peg Molina will be running the Boston Marathon to raise money
for the Mark Gillen Fund. Check out Peg Molina's page
(designed by Kimberly Thompson) and see how you can help out.
