Records tumble at Seattle Open

(Seattle, WA) Under perfect conditions, all four winners set new meet records at today's Seattle Open Cross Country Classic at Lincoln Park.

In the men's 4-kilometer race, Club Northwest runner Ray McClanahan of Portland, OR., avenged a loss suffered last year to defending champion Todd Davis, by turning the tables on him, winning the race in 13:07, besting Davis by seven seconds, and Davis' 1999 mark of 13:12. Casey Moriarty of Seattle finished third in 15:19.

Mindy Leffler of Bellevue, a former Issaquah High School standout who attended Georgetown University, easily won the women's 4-kilometer race in a course record time of 15:22, besting her own course record by 17 seconds, despite a wrong turn on the first lap of the race. Kristen Mora of Seattle finished behind Leffler in 16:18, with Megan Shihade of Seattle third in 16:26.

Defending champion Tina Connelly, the 1998 and 1999 Canadian national cross country champion from Port Coquitlam, BC, cruised to victory in the women's 6-kilometer race, winning in 20:35. Fellow Canadian Lisa Harvey of Calgary finished in the runner-up position in 22:11, while Judith LeRoy of Victoria finished third in 22:24.

Connelly is using the Seattle Open as a tune-up for two races in Japan next month, along with the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March in Vilamoura, Portugal.

Despite some concerns expressed about his fitness by coach Mike Scott, Rob Cook of Seattle won the featured men's 10-kilometer race over the Lincoln Park course in a new meet record time of 29:49, besting his own meet record of 30:08 set last year. The New Balance standout, preparing for the USA Cross Country Championships in two weeks in Greensboro, North Carolina, took command of the race from the beginning, and never was threatened.

Canadian national team member Jeremy Deere of Calgary finished in the runner-up position in a time of 30:27, followed by 1999 Seattle Marathon winner Uli Steidl of Germany, a graduate student at the University of Washington, who ran 30:57. Canadians David Milne and Graham Cocksedge rounded out the top five, running 31:04. and 31:16.

In the accompanying Northwest International Team Challenge competition, the Washington teams won both events, defeating British Columbia. The Washington men's team, which squeezed out a close 17-19 win in the 10-k race, consisted of Cook, Steidl, Matt Messner, and Brian Montgomery. Washington had the only complete team in the women's 6-k race, consisting of Kimball Bender, Gwen Hundley, Judy Fisher, and Barbara Jones.

The Seattle Open Cross Country Classic was presented by NIKE, with assistance from AT&T Wireless Services, and Racegate.com. The Seattle Open is part of the North American Winter Cross Country Series of races designed to prepare distance runners for the US national championships in mid-February, as well as international competition.
