Huntington Beach State Park 5K

Huntington Beach State Park, SC, September 2, 2000

Aiken, Batten in sub-15:00 tie at Huntington Beach 5K

The 3rd annual event was changed from a 10K beach run to a very beautiful and scenic 5K road race through the Park. A total of 133 runners and walkers turned out to make the event a great success.

The course was a beautiful route through the park, taking views of scenic marsh, wildlife, and canopy tree avenues. It concluded with a half mile straight paved path leading to the majestic Atalaya Castle and finish line.

After an early morning rain two hours before the event, the sun began to break the clouds and clear for a gorgeous day. With the starting temperature in the mid 70's, Irving Batten of Summerville, SC and Mike Aiken of Charleston, SC trailed early leader Robert Miller of Salisbury, NC for a half mile before launching their attack. With a strong move the two runners pushed together all the way to the finish, tying for first with times of 14:58 over the very flat and fast scenic route. Miller held on for third in 15:43.

On the women's side, 15 year old high school standout Michelle Milner of Aiken, SC captured first-place with a time of 18:45, holding off Tara Gurry of North Myrtle Beach who took runner-up honors in 19:06. Marcie Milner, who is twin sister of the winner, finished third with a time of 19:45.
