WABASH CANNONBALL 5K RUN/WALK
WHITEHOUSE, OHIO
August 26, 2000
On Saturday, August 26, 2000, the clear sunny skies turned dark and dreary as the Second Annual Wabash Cannonball 5K Run was about to start. It was sunny and 80 degrees at 5:00 p.m. By the time the race started at 7:05 p.m., the temperature was 73 degrees. One-half inch of rain fell between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. We watched the weather with patience to make certain there was no danger from lightening.
There were 179 runners/walkers registered for the race. This year's overall winner was Nick Smith from Defiance, Ohio. Smith set the new course record in 16:08.65. The female overall winner was Mandy McCumber with a course record time of 19:10.64. McCumber, from Fostoria, was 11th overall.
vFour of the 102 pre-registered did not pick up their packets and 28 runners that registered the day of the race, did not run or did not finish. Because of the number of pre-registered Males 15 and Under, we went 5 deep in awards. Next year, each age group will go a minimum of 3 deep with the awards or more, depending on the number of people that pre-register. Get your registrations in early. We will also create a new age category of 11 and under and possibly rearrange the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups.
Although all the expenses are not in, the preliminary number indicates the run generated $390 for the Matt Manos Scholarship Fund and $2,000 for the Wabash Cannonball Trail Development Fund. The Village of Whitehouse and Lucas County have received preliminary approval for a Transportation Enhancement Grant to pave the Trail from Waterville Street in downtown Whitehouse to Yawberg Road in Providence Township. If the application receives final approval this fall, the funds will be available in 2002.
We have been asked about purchasing additional Wabash Cannonball Tee Shirts. Our shirt supplier is willing to print more shirts. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, send your name, address, telephone number, and shirt size plus $6.00 for the shirt and $2.50 for postage and handling to: The Wabash Cannonball 5K Run, P.O. Box 2476, Whitehouse, Ohio 43571 by October 15, 2000. If enough interest is warranted, we will order the shirts. If not, we will return your checks.
