Belmont, Pittsfield at Bishop Brady

Concord, NH, September 16, 2000

Overall Results

By Kevin Beck
Belmont, Pittsfield at Bishop Brady - 9/16/00Belmont, Pittsfield at Bishop Brady
- 9/16/00
For the first time since the early 1990's, Bishop Brady hosted its own
cross-country meet. Belmont and Pittsfield high schools graciously accepted
Brady's invitation to attend and brought small yet capable squads to test the
newly created, formidable course that in all likelihood will be used for the
2001 Capital Area Championships.
Given the punishing 400-meter incline three-fourths of a mile into the race,
fast times were not an expectation. So it wasn't surprising that most team
members slowed by forty-five seconds to two minutes from their Wednesday race at
Merrimack Valley, itself no cakewalk. This made the winning efforts by Jeremy
Huckins (17:56; his fourth victory in five starts this season) and Ruby Weldon
(22:01 in a bold, wire-to-wire strategy) all the more impressive.
The boys' team easily repelled its Class M/S competition, but the girls wound up
third against a pair of teams that might well contend for the divisional state
championship. Overall, favorable weather and thrumming enthusiasm by the parents
and teachers of Bishop Brady High School made this event a complete success.
