Sportshoe Center Maine Marathon/Relay/Half Marathon

Portland, ME, October 1, 2000

Decker wins Maine Marathon for fourth time

The ninth annual Sportshoe Center Maine Marathon/Relay/Half Marathon featured gorgeous weather, a record number of entrants for all three races, another dominant performance by the man who shattered the course record last year, and an impressive debut marathon by the newest female star on the Maine road running scene.

Byrne Decker of Yarmouth, Maine, and Mya Mangawang of Brunswick, Maine, won their respective divisions in the full marathon. For Decker, it was business as usual, as he claimed his fourth Maine Marathon victory in five years with a time of two hours, 31 minutes and 24 seconds. Mangawang, meanwhile, zipped to a fifth-place overall finish as she clocked 2:57:48 in her first-ever marathon.

Decker, 33, again used this race as a training run for a marathon later in the fall -- this time the Dublin Marathon. He took it easy for the first half of the race and trailed Hamcha Moatacim of Dover, N.H., by nearly four minutes at one point, but he quickly closed the gap after the halfway point and moved into the lead by Mile 21. He eventually finished more than six minutes ahead of a fading Moatacim, who nevertheless held on for second place in 2:37:36.

Mangawang, 27, led the women's field throughout the race and beat 1997 champion Mary Meehan-Bates of Intervale, N.H., by more than eight minutes. Masters star Pamela Hall, 47, of Litchfield, N.H., placed third overall for the second year in a row (3:18:25).

One of the day's most noteworthy performances was turned in by 60-year-old Bernd Heinrich of Hinesburg, Vt. Heinrich, a member of the Maine Running Hall of Fame, placed 13th overall in 3:01:40.

Two out-of-state runners won their respective divisions in the half marathon. Danny Gough of Portsmouth, R.I., placed first overall in 1:08:46, followed by Todd Coffin of Freeport, Maine (1:09:43). Connie Davis of Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y., was the first female finisher (1:23:47), 36 seconds ahead of Erin Kelly of Somerville, Mass.
