Khoury's 4.13 mile
Somerville, MA, October 26, 2000
As I trudged across the tundra toward the sea, my eyes nearly frozen shut by the high winds lashing against my weakened body, I couldn't help but think, "Why didn't I just stay in Somerville?" It was just then that a 2,500-lb juvenile elephant seal splashed up onto the barren beach. He was unaware of my approach as I extracted the long flensing knife from underneath my ragged coat. I stopped to let him work his way further up the beach. Hunger was gnawing at my insides, but I had to let him settle in for a snooze before I made my attack. Indeed I did surprise him, as he heaved his hulking body upwards as the knife sliced his belly wide open. Before his eyes glazed over, he'd raked my left forearm with his claws, and I wondered whether this was the injury that would finally end my life.
