On Sunday, October 22, the Third Annual Groton Town Forest Trail Races were held. There were a record number of entries this year, with 96 runners in the 3-mile race and 120 in the 10-mile race. Runners came from all six New England states, New York, Utah, and Oregon!
It was a beautiful day with the temperature near 60 degrees, no clouds, and some of the prettiest foliage that could be imagined in late October. For the second year in a row, the 3-mile race was won by a Groton resident. This year it was 15-year old Pat Provost (who finished second last year) in a course record of 22:04, which was over a minute faster than last year's best time! The first woman finisher was Kim Tobin of South Boston, in 24:44, in 11th place.
The 10-mile race was won by one of New England's top trail runners, Ken Clark of Somers, CT in a time of 1:03:09. The first woman finisher was Michell Holloway-Creaven of New Ipswich, NH, in an excellent time of 1:19:19, in 9th place. This year, 31 runners got lost in this race, demonstrating that speed is not the only skill required in this sport. An ability to follow the trail markings is also essential to a successful performance.
