184th FTC Friday Night Five

Falmouth, MA, December 29, 2000

Friday Night Runners Usher out the Year 2000

by Ken Gartner

It was a crisp 27 degrees and there were 27 runners at the final Friday Night Five of the year. Fortunately the upcoming storm didn't interfere with the race. It was actually one of the most beautiful running nights of the year, with no wind and bright clear stars in the sky. It was also a very fast field, as four runners cracked 30 minutes for the first time all year, and fifth place finisher Jeff List was only 30 seconds over the half hour mark.

There were several runners who waited until the last race of the year to make their Friday Night Five debuts. Among them was Patricia McPherson, wife of the newly elected Falmouth Track Club president. The two exchanged roles, and this week and Patricia did the running while her husband, Dave watched the kids. The new First Lady finished her first Friday Night Five on the last running of the year. She was smart enough to latch onto someone else who knew the course so she wouldn't get lost and finished with a fine time of 44:30.

All runners are invited to usher in the New Year with next week's running of the Friday Night Five. The run starts at 5:30 p.m. from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for this self-timed event and reflector vests are required.
