Big Thursday Dam Mill 5K brings out a large field of 204 runners
By Tim Bamforth
The ever popular running of the Dam Mill 5K (formally called the Damn Mill 5k since it began in the early eighties) was held from Cupula Park in Millsboro last Saturday morning. The largest field of runners in the nineties with 204 finishers, and one of the top three all-time, took to the streets for the out and back fast, T.A.C. Certified course through the heart of the Big Thursday Celebration.
"The Millsboro Police and Fire Police did an excellent job patrolling the course and making it as safe as possible," said Seashore Strider Series Coordinator Dr. Lee Masser. "This is the only event all summer that there is not a car on the course."
Last year's event was highlighted by a new course record of 15:01 by Aaron Price, while this year the winning time was surprisingly more than two minutes slower. Credit goes to 37 year old veteran Leslie Wright of Largo, Md. who captured the Overall Male Title in 17:03, followed by Eric Payne of Felton in a close second in 17:05.
"Leslie just took it to the front as he has done many times before and this year we just didn't have the out of town speedsters in the field," commented lead biker Joe LoBiondo.
Master Dianna Golden, 47, of York, PA captured the Overall Female Title in 20:13, while Amanda Clark of Frankford was second in 21:17.
Glenn Costello of Norwich, CT. won the Master Male Title in 17:38 in fourth place, while Mary Ann Conner of New York, NY. won the Master Female Title in 22:07.
77 year old Adrian Mead was the oldest finisher in 196th place in 35:08, while 6 year old Sam Kane was the youngest finisher in 199th place in 35:33. Congratulations to all sponsors and volunteers that made the event a success.
