For the third time this year, the others being July 1 and May 27, Peg Molina
and Ed Sandifer were the winners at Roxbury. They combine for 15 Roxbury
wins this year, and their experience is attested by their combined age of over
90 years. The two won their divisions by a total of only 9 seconds.
The young legs have some advantages, but on a muggy morning with the humidity
well over 90%, experience counts for quite a bit.
The women's race was the close one, as Peg Molina nipped Roxbury Rookie
Cassandra Beauvais by two seconds, probably the closest finish of the
year. Peg led a field of 17 women in this week's race.
Ed Sandifer's 7 second win over last week's winner Max Bertz was a
comparative rout. The men's race had lots of contenders early, as the
entire New Milford High School boys' cross country team seemed to be celebrating
their last weekend of summer vacation with a race in Roxbury. At a mile
and a half, the lead pack was still four, the eventual top four finishers.
Ed Sandifer, getting a bit dottie in his old age, kept getting them mixed up,
since their names were so similar, Matt, Max and Mike. Matt dropped off
just as they turned onto Rt 67. Mike fell back at the 2 mile mark.
Max led most of the rest of the way in, but faltered on the next to last hill,
just before the finish line came into sight, and Ed Sandifer pulled away for his
narrow win.
