Soapstone Assault 5.5M

The 2000 Soapstone Assault enjoyed a fine day for running with its solid overcast and occasional light drizzle. Thirty-five intrepid runners entered, 29 made it to the start and all but 2 finished the entire course.

The Unofficial Results are added on the right to show the impact of the handicap start system on positions. The interval between Starting Groups was 47 seconds. Groups were the same as the age/gender groups perfected over the better part of a century for the famous Dipsea trail race in California.

Rich Fargo's win was impressive, placing first regardless of how the run was timed! Both Carol Kane and Deborah Schieffer turned in great performances, 2nd and 4th respectively. Ken Clark ran very well with the 2nd fastest Running Time but it wasn't good enough to catch Carol Kane thanks to her bigger Head Start.

Team results were decisive. The Western Massachusetts Athletic Club (Team B) was the only one to have the required 4 members finish! I guess the Shenipsit Striders have been humbled.
