2000 Roxbury Run #37 4.3M

Dinosaurs Duel

Ed Sandifer, 48, and Tony Benivegna, 52, had a titanic Duel of the Dinosaurs in this week's 4.3 mile Roxbury Road Race.  It's hard to know which one to call an Old Fossil.  Tony, in only his third Roxbury Road Race, has already figured out what it takes to beat Ed.  You have to go out fast enough, either to get a big lead, or to take away his legs so he can't use his characteristic strong last mile.

The duo followed fast starting Kirkland Requejo for the first mile, until they were joined by Mark Chantry at the mile mark.  Half a mile later, though, Chantry and Requejo had dropped back, and it was head to head, Benivegna against Sandifer.  They were back and forth, about even on the flat spots, Tony a little stronger on the down hills, and Sandifer a little stronger going up.

Eventually, the nature of the course, two miles down, then two miles up, played to Sandifer's strength, and he pulled away with about 3/4 mile to go, for a 16 second win.  It is interesting to note that, on the same course in the opposite direction, just two weeks ago (follow the link to see the results), Sandifer prevailed by 31 seconds.  Benivegna has cut that gap in half.  Watch for this rivalry to heat up.

Meanwhile, Lynn Zuback nabbed her first ever Roxbury win by besting Mo van Moffaert by almost four minutes.

There were lots of people in the alternate races this week, in part because many of them were saving their legs for Sunday's Ocean State Marathon.  Best wishes for all.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
