Nike Women's 8K a big success!
VANCOUVER - The eleventh running of the award-winning Nike Women's 8K took place on Sunday, September 10. This event, which celebrates the strengths of women, attracted 1,800 women of all fitness levels. Participants raced, ran, jogged, walked or strolled the scenic 8km course through Queen Elizabeth Park and surrounding area. The new course that started and finished at Nat Bailey Stadium was very popular with the participants. Lori Durward, who finished second last year, and first in 1998, took first place once again this year in a time of 29:28. In second place was Erin Heffring at 31:14. Julia Foy from Global Television was there to MC the festivities.
Committed to making a difference, participants in the Nike Women's 8K raised pledges to support breast cancer research through the BC Cancer Foundation. This year, the event raised over $75,000. In honour of Daisy Dusangh, a former 8K participant who lost a courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of twenty-seven, the Nike Women's 8K presented the team that raised the most pledge money with the Daisy's Hope Memorial Trophy. Organizers were pleased to present this year's trophy to a group of 125 family members and friends if Daisy's who called themselves "Team Daisy's Hope" and collected over $15,000.
Event organizers and the BC Cancer Foundation thank all sponsors, participants, volunteers, and pledge donors for making the event such a success.
