St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s Fastest 5K Race Double 2002

After finishing third at the Bix 7, one of America’s top runners, Kyle Baker, scorched the Butler University 5K course in 14:11 to dominate a small but strong field of nationally ranked Open and Masters runners in the second race of the Indiana All Star Running Club’s Fastest 5K Race Double.  Also fresh off a 3:54 mile (road course), Kyle pulled away from Mark Tucker, Australia’s national record holder at 5K and a member of Butler University’s nationally ranked cross country team.  Josh Trisler, recent IU cross country graduate, and Reuben Njau, brother of the Olympic steeplechase record holder were third and fourth.  Former Indiana State Track 2-mile Champ Charlie Koeppen completed a “fab first 5”.  Charlie runs for Northern Arizona University, which finished 4th in last year’s NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Kelly French, training with the Indiana Invaders, and one of the Midwest’s best, won the Women’s Open, and Jennifer Potts established herself as one of America’s best Female Masters runners with a 17:38.

In the two race series, several top Masters runners also ran some of the best times in the U.S. this summer.  Tim Mylin ran a 15:41 in the first race, and Gary Romesser, who set two American records in the 50+ age group last year, ran a 15:54 in the second race.  Randy Ward was third best and Pat Puckett, nationally ranked at 50K, had the fourth best time.  Next year’s 2 Race Double will be Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend with $20,000 in prize money.
