Start of the 5K
A record crowd of 4994 registered runners pounded through the streets of Manchester NH at 6:30 pm Thurday night. Thousand more cheered the runners on. Twelve months of planning for Healthsource and Race Director, Tim Dean, produced this record field. This is the sixth running of the 5k and the fourth year in a row where Healthsource has been the "name sponsor". It is the largest New Hampshire race and one of the largest in New England.
Records were also set on the course with both the Men's and Women's course records being smashed. In the men's division, LHOUSSINE SIBA of Kingston New York crossed the line in 14:12 just 1 second ahead of BRIAN BAKER of Cambridge MA and 40 seconds ahead of JOHN MORTIMAR from Londonderry New Hampshire.

In the women's race, Maria Servin from Mexico, currently living in Lakesville MA, set a course record of 16:20, 32 seconds ahead of Molly Watcke (16:52) of Winterport Maine. Nearly a minute passed before the next woman, Heather Couture, crossed in third place.
In a post race exclusive "Cool Running" interview, race director Tim Dean was full of praise for his hundreds of volunteers and 5,000 runners who came out on the day. He was extremely excited about being able to provide $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. He knew the race had made it big time when he spotted a news helicopter hovering overhead just before the start of the race. "It means a lot to me and Healthsource to see 5000 runners at our event"." It tells us that the "running movement" is alive and well, especially in New England". "It's very important to Healthsource to see so many people taking care of themselves."

Joan Benoit-Samuelson runs with the pack
"Healthsource is very pleased to see the growth of this race. In the 4 years Healthsource has been the "name sponsor", the race has added about a 1000 runners a year". "We are most pleased about the fact that we can give something to the American Cancer Society who are our main beneficiary". "We have seen a significant increase in interest from New Hampshire and New England companies to be involved and to encourage their employees to be involved, to exercise regularly as well as doing something good for a great cause."

"We are also pleased to see the course records broken as it adds another dimesnsion to the event. It will encourage other top runners to accept the challenge in future years".
