Only a short distance from Albany, New York, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts, historic Old Chatham is a perfect location for what could easily become a classic road race. The area's distinctive, postcard-perfect setting and old world charm makes this 5K race a "must do" for runners and walkers alike. Old Chatham's rich history is steeped in Olde English style and traditions, some of which, like fox hunting, are as much a part of life today as in the 1700's.
The scenic, paved road course traverses the gently rolling countryside offering beautiful vistas around every bend. Music plays while friendly volunteers offer refreshments and motivation at aid stations along the USATF-certified 5K (3.1 mile) "out-and-back" course. A professional finish line crew ensures quick and accurate posting of results.
Whatever your preference, this 5K event will be exciting for runners, race walkers and fitness walkers, individually or in two-person teams. In addition, a 1-mile youth race will be held for those 12 years old and under. Over 130 prize categories increase your chances of receiving a distinctive, Shaker hand-crafted award. In addition, all entrants receive a free pass to the Shaker Museum and Library and will be entered into random drawing for $1000's worth of prizes.
After the race, refuel with delicious and healthy refreshments, get a massage and collect your awards and gifts. Then, spend some time touring the Shaker Museum and Library with your free pass. Walk across the road to see the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company, the country's largest commercial sheep dairy farm. Check out the menu and accommodations at the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company Inn, recently recognized as one of the Top 25 New Restaurants in America by Esquire Magazine. Take a driving tour of the local area, where within just a few miles, you'll find other restaurants, country stores, art galleries, antique shops, herb gardens, farm stands, nature preserves, and other interesting spots. Visit nearby Chatham Village with its unique shops.
Founded in 1912 by George Morris, a local philanthropist devoted to helping Chatham area youths, the Morris Memorial's mission is positive youth development. Through its Youth Center on Park Row in Chatham, it provides after-school and weekend activities for hundreds of youths of all ages. The Morris Memorial also sponsors Chatham Gold, a club for youths in grades 3-8, offering a spring track & field team, a summer running camp and a fall cross-country program. To support expanded educational, recreational and social programs and extend its limited operating schedule, fund-raising events, like this one, are necessary.
