after race party
The After Race Party!

Good Times, Good Friends, Good Running

The Bobby Bell 5-Miler is as famous for its race course as it is for its post race festivities. "Only fifty-percent of our race is on the roads, the other half is at our post race party where participants can share a pint of Guiness and discuss war stories with old and new friends," says race director Dave LaBrode. The party takes place in the back lot of the Lasting Room Pub overlooking the majestic Merrimack River. The Lasting room is housed in a renovated shoe mill, thus the name. In an amazing coincidence, the Lasting Room was the only building to survive the Great Haverhill fire of 1882 giving further meaning to its name. Furthermore the after race party is famous for its incredible Lasting power. Many years race participants as well as volunteers have been known to make an entire day and, and for some, evening, of the event. Regardless of whether you stay for a few minutes or several hours, the turn of the century mill buildings along the river makes for a superb setting for a great after race get together.

Dave LaBrode

Director LaBrode, who is somewhat of an historian of the Pub likes to tell participants not only the history of the local environ, but also of the race. "This is a men's race that we started as a tongue and cheek reaction to the Bonne Bell 10K [now the Tuft's 10K]. We think our event provides a fun time to the runner. We like to think you can say to your wife 'do you want to come,' and if the answer is 'no,' you can then tell her 'I'll see you at five.' Our race is great but the fun doesn't stop after the running is over. We try and cover all the bases by offering things such as 4 heavywieght divisions making it a true Clydesdale event, middle of the pack awards, lots of age division awards, a buffet and much, much more. We even award a two year subscription to the Hockomock Swamp Rat to the first person who just missed winning an award. I guess you could say we even have an award for being a loser."
