1995 Race Story

Despite a 46-mph wind that buffeted his 5'3, 98-pound frame, Gideon Mutisya of Kenya blew away his rival Eddy Hellebuyck, defending champion Dave Dunham and the rest of a record field to win hit Mt. Washington debut in 1:01:42. "Oh my gosh!" exclaimed Mutisya upon crossing the finish line, "this hill! Too much wind!"

J'ne Day-Lucore of Denver claimed her third Mt Washington championship in as many tries, leading the women's field up the 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road in 1:17:29.

An impressive triumvirate of New Englanders followed Mutisya. Craig Fram joined Dunham in breaking away from Hellebuyck and running side by side to the finish line - judges awarded 2nd place to Fram -- and Eric Morse finished fourth while Hellebuyck was 5th.

Day-Lucore's closest cometition was Sandra Natal, who has now finished 6th, 3rd and 2nd in her three successive Mt. Washington appearances. Anna Brook followed 20 seconds later, and trackster Kathy Kanes was 4th.

Besides Dunham, four other previous Mt. Washington winners showed up this year. Peg Donovan (1982), now 40, easily won the masters' division while Keith Woodward (1982) defended his men's masters' title. Seven-time winner Bob Hodge was 17th and Gary Johnson, who won in 1975, came back 20 years later to finish 36th in 1:14:29.

To no one's surprise, Sumner Brown (1:13:56) was the class of the field in the men's over-50 division. Carrie Prsi topped the female veterans in 1:42:33, taking nearly a minute off her course record for women ages 55-59.

Two other age-group records fell: Maggie Solomon (60-64) ran a 1:51:35 and Runner's World magazine's Eileen Portz-Shovlin (45-49) reached the 6288' summit in 1:38:34.

Led by Fram, Dunham and Morse, the Central Mass Striders lowered their men's team course record from 5:30:34 to 5:25:57. Top women's team was Cambridge Sports Union, as Brook, Sue Lachance, and Susan McNatt racn a combined 4:13:38. Winners' Circle won the masters men's and women's team prizes.

Age-Graded ("WAVA") times are based on tables developed by the World Association of Veteran Athletes and National Masters News. This handicapping system allows older and younger runners to see how they compare versus open division runners. More significantly it allows us more fairly to compare performances of all runners over 40; cash prizes and trophies are awarded on this basis.

Once again, runners and organizers are grateful to HEALTHSOURCE, our principal sponsor, and to associate sponsors BRIDGTON ACADEMY and POLAR BEVERAGES. Their support provides crucial funding for staging the race each year.

Mutisya's fellow Kenyan, former Olympian Joseph Nzau was 3rd age-graded master.

Seth williams, 17, of Manomet, Ma, repeated as top male junior and places 21st overall. Top female junior was Ember Brosius of Wayne, ME.

A new record of 929 runners (125 women, 777 men) finished this year -- up from 884 in 1994. They came from 27 states and from Ontario, Quebec, Kenya, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Germany and Brazil.
