Rules of the Road

The Cool Running Community Forums are your place for lively discussion with other runners. The provide a venue for sharing running experiences, offering advice, receiving support for your training, and generally enjoying the company of other runners. We have established the following guidelines to ensure that the discussion forums remain a fun, healthy, supportive and educational environment.

By participating in the Cool Running message boards, you are agreeing to abide by these rules of the road. The discussion forum rules of etiquette are in keeping with this site's terms of service and privacy policy. If you have questions about these rules or this site's terms of use, feel free to contact us.

Our promise to you

Cool Running promises you:

A safe, well-lit place

We promise that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that our boards are safe, well-lit places that are fun, informative and supportive. Our moderators are selected as the most helpful, friendly and active members of our community.

The Cool Running community is a place where it's okay to be yourself -- be that serious, silly or sad -- as long as you always act with respect for your fellow Cool Runners. We promise that at Cool Running, you won't have to leave your personality at the door. We promise to bring passion to our work and to our community and to act with respect and appreciation for our members. We will listen to your suggestions and complaints, and try to incorporate your ideas in everything we do.

Help when you need it

If you come across any violations of the rules below or have any problems navigating the site, do not hesitate to notify the moderator of the forum or contact us directly. We'll be happy to address your concerns.

Your promise to us

From everyone in our community, we encourage (and in some instances demand) the following:

Don't be afraid to post

If you're new to our community, taking the step for the first time to post publicly to a message board can sometimes seem intimidating. Don't be afraid to jump into a discussion. We have a very supportive community that serves up heavy doses of knowledge, support and enthusiasm.

Feel free to "lurk" and listen

While we hope that you'll become an active participant and join in our discussions, you're welcome, of course, to simply hang out quietly until you feel more comfortable posting a message.

Tap into an incredible font of information

Whether you're looking for tips for taking your first steps, running a faster 800m, recovering from injury, eating better, or completing a sub-3 marathon, our members are here to help. Likewise, the discussion forums are an ideal place to share your running experiences and knowledge with others who need it. This is your place to get the answers you need and talk about running, a sport we all love.

Welcome newcomers

When newcomers arrive, say "hi" and welcome them to our growing community. Many of our community's "old timers" (regardless of age) offer a wealth of knowledge and have much to share. Help new folks "learn the ropes" about how to find information and resources, save time, and how to get involved.

Agree to disagree, respectfully

We invite and encourage a healthy exchange of opinions; disagreements are okay. If you disagree with a member's post or opinion, by all means, challenge the opinion. However, any challenge must be given with a sense of respect for the other person. The real objective of community is to understand each other, not to attack others and convince them that you're right. Name-calling, insults, "flaming" and attacks are not appropriate and will not be tolerated.

Don't attack others

Because this is so important, we'll say it again: Don't attack others. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully, without insult or personal attack.

Harassing, offensive, vulgar, abusive, hateful or bashing communications -- especially those aimed at sexual orientation, gender, race, color, religious views, national origin, or disability -- will not be permitted. Before you post a message that is intended to embarrass, humiliate or harass another person or group of people, stop and think first. Harassing communications are considered to be those that may cause distress, embarrassment, unwanted attention or other discomfort.

Such communications may be removed at the moderators' discretion, and the user who posts them may receive sanctions, including the removal of his or her account and/or refusal of service from this site.

Post with only one account name

The purpose of these forums is to share views, opinions and advice -- in a nutshell, to form a healthy, constructive online community. Posting under multiple member names is disruptive to this purpose, particularly when it is done with mischievous intent, including pretending to be another member. Users who abuse their posting privileges by repeatedly posting under multiple member names may receive sanctions, including the removal of his or her posts and/or removal of his or her account and/or refusal of service from this site.

Keep it on-topic

The various forums at Cool Running were created to address specific topics. (The exception is The Clubhouse, which is a catch-all forum for light-hearted discussion with other runners). Discussions should be on-topic with respect to the forum in which they are posted. Off-topic discussions can be frustrating to other users and may be moved, deleted or locked by the forum moderator.

Keep personal information personal

Think before you post or speak: Do you really want to put your address or telephone number on the public message board? We encourage you to keep personal information personal. Similarly, do not ask for personal information from others. This includes, but is not limited to, communications that ask for personal information submitted via e-mail, mail, telephone, surveys and research studies.

Keep your posts clean

There may be places where explicit, obscene or vulgar language, graphics or behavior is appropriate: Cool Running is not one of them. Messages that contain explicit, obscene or vulgar language will be removed. Similarly, messages that solicit or offer explicit or X-rated GIFs, JPEGs or other graphic files will be deleted without notice.

Be courteous: Avoid duplicate posts

Do not post the same message more than once on a message board or on many boards. Duplicate messages can be frustrating for other members, especially for those whose time and energy is limited. Weeding through the same message in multiple locations can be not only frustrating, but downright annoying. Duplicate messages will be deleted.

Don't post commercial messages

Don't post commercial messages or solicitations in message boards. Posts containing commercial or product/service promotional messages -- included but not limited to references to internet sites, URLS, or links to other commercial Web sites -- will be removed.

Don't post others' copyrighted information

Information copyrighted or owned by any individual or entity other than the member should not be posted on the message boards or software libraries without the consent of the owner. If such an event occurs, the individual posting the information shall be held solely responsible. Cool Running shall not be held responsible for member-posted information that may violate copyright law.

To report a problem

If you come across any of the above listed violations or have any problems navigating the site, do not hesitate to notify the moderator of the forum or contact us directly. We'll be happy to address your concerns.

We reserve the right

Cool Running reserves the right to remove a post which, in the discretion of the moderators or site administrators, violates any of the above rules, or does not relate to the topic being discussed in the board.

In addition, we reserve the right to organize message boards (or folders) in order to best serve the majority of our members. For example, narrow-interest or minimal activity topics may, at the discretion of Cool Running, be relocated to a more appropriate folder or message board, or deleted entirely.

We also reserve the right to prohibit or delete messages that are thought to violate applicable law or that may be harmful to other members, the Cool Running community, or the rights of Cool Running or others.

That said, considering the real-time nature of this bulletin board, it is impossible for us to review messages or confirm the validity of information posted before it appears on the board. Cool Running does not vouch for or warrant the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any message, and is not responsible for the contents of any message. Nor can we ensure prompt removal of offending message board posts.

We also reserve the right to remove your Cool Running membership from you should you violate these rules or any of our Terms of Service. Likewise, we reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you. If you haven't read the Terms of Service, please do so.
