My Mp3 player has always been a source of motivation for me on short and long training runs as well as during races. Good music really allows me to push myself when training. However, when reading the rules for a race (team triathlon) that Im doing in October it clearly states that runner's can not wear headphones of any kind during the race. This is the first time Ive encountered this and I guess my question is, should I be training with out music ?? thanks for the input. ------------------

Yes you should run without music. I gave it up awhile ago, and I enjoy running much more without the crutch....I just enjoy watching people, nature, sights, and things going on around me. I gave up my HR monitor also...but that's another thread.Good luck, Tim

I run with music occasionally, especially on long runs, but have never raced with headphones on and if it is a triathlon they will enforce that rule. I have always found enough mental stimulation in a race that I have never wanted headphones on. It's great in the morning to be running pre-dawn, listening to the birds wake up. You won't miss them for long.------------------ "There's something wrong with a society that drives a car to work out in a gym." Bill Nye The Science Guy

My ipod headphones went on the fritz about 3-4 months ago and being too lazy to replace them in a timely fashion I continued to run with them. Just this week, I picked up a new pair of headphones and started to run ... well after about 5 minutes I had yanked them out since it was so distracting to my running. My advice ... go cold turkey and leave the music at home and listen to the birds during a run! Cheers

USATF has banned headphones at all sanctioned road races. Posted Friday, 6 April, 2007 (Duluth, MN) -- USA Track & Field (USATF) recently adopted a new rule banning the use of headphones and other music devices at all USATF-sanctioned running events. USATF, the governing body for long-distance running and track & field in the United States, adopted the rule (#144.3b) in an effort to increase runner safety. Previously, USATF guidelines recommended the prohibition of music devices for long-distance running events, but such a measure had not been mandatory until this year.

I'm amazed that Alan Webb managed to win the Golden League 1,500 meters in Paris without using an I-Pod for motivation. How did he do it?

For me its no so much motivation as it is cadence. Right now I've got about 5 songs that give me the perfect beat for how fast my footstrikes should be when I'm running 5k pace.

Train with the IPOD, run the race without it. I promise that you won't slow down or get bored or jamb your thumb into your eyeball out of sheer agony. I promise. I've been there and do that. It's a little like swimming without floaties for the first time. You'll feel nervous but will realize a mile in that participating in an event is just a whole different can of worms or ball of wax or whatever the metaphor is. Again, I say this not because I'm an "only-weaklings-listen-to-music guy," but because I forgot my IPOD for a race and have never looked back. I still use the music on most training runs. BTW, I have a DJ Steveboy 180 bpm mix that I use when I want to pick up the pace and stay on cadence. If you do that in training, you'll automatically use that cadence in the race w/o the music.

Hi, I use my MP3 player on all of my runs, but I don't use them during races. The first two races I did, I ran them with a friend, (had someone to talk to during the race) that I had trained with on all of my long runs, then when I went on to train for the Marathon, I was a little worried about not having my MP3 player during the marathon since I would be out there for over 4 hours. However, the atmosphere of the race was so aewsome that I really enjoyed it, to bad there couldn't be crowds of people and water stations during my long runs , I wouldn't worry about the race, it will be fun without head phones.

The mp3 player is great on the treadmill. Wouldn't want to do without it. For me it's a distraction during a race or training outdoors. It's part of the race fun to interact with the other runners. Don't think you'll miss it. One day I forgot my watch and couldn't do splits. I lived thru it. And the HR monitor? It was a great help to begin with, but I'm past needing it now. I took the advice to listen to my body. Good advice.

I've been using my MP3 player during about half of my training for the marathon. It's been working well so far, but I do notice that long runs without music are more difficult for me. You probably want to run without music once in a while, just to see how your body reacts to the new atmosphere. You might find little or no impact, which would be very nice indeed.Shifting your focus onto a matter that requires serious thought is a great substitute for music, in my opinion. I've been writing out stories during longer runs, and it's a great mental tactic.

I pretty much agree with SS. Like others, I do much, about 70% of my training runs, with the ipod. (I tend to listen to NPR podcasts.) I wouldn't run a race with the ipod. I enjoy the experience of race day too much. That said, i find it a pretty bad idea to try anything new on race day. Therefore, my suggestion is to run a few training runs with the ipod. Who knows, you may actually like running without it better.
