If you're thinking of the "Duel in the Sun" at Boston in 1982, my understanding is Salazar didn't drink anything the whole race.

I actually had planned to share the water with anyone who wanted it. However, I was running a fever right before the race so I thought that it probably wasn't a good idea to share with them. However, I did encourage everyone to take water at the next station as it was ovious they hadn't taken enough. Just like I did the year before.

That is actually an excellent question. I used to drink very little if any at all. Everytime I would bonk horrendously. I started drinking water during the long runs and races. I started doing better and better. However, I still could tell that I was getting dehydrated.

Honeslty, I really don't know why I need so much water. Maybe it is metabolism? However, I do know that I overheat very easily. I don't drink all of the water. I pour some of it over me. However, on Saturday I did drink at least 6 twenty two ounce water bottles and I probably could have used 1 more.

I took more than 8 gels(I lost count) on Saturday so I needed a lot of water to go along with that.

I am working on cutting the amount of water and gels that I need back. Once I get to the point where I have my water intake under control I will stop getting the extra aide during the races.

Right now I see no problem with it. If the elites can put their own stuff out there. I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to.

Jason-
elites get approval and they are subject to more scrutiny than you, ie urinalysis. Not to mention if their friends handed it to them they'd get it for sure. I've used elite table twice and once my stuff wasn't there and the second time, the volunteer handed me wrong stuff (and in this instance you go without, using someone else's is DQ)

The water thing: some people "do" need more water. If you drink that much, you should consider supplementing with salt rather than using 8 gels!!! I don't know at what intervals you take the gels but if you are spreading them out, you are on a rollercoaster of quick sugar for one mile and forcing your body back to stored energy and then finding it and then a few miles it sees quick energy again and gobbles it up and burns it up after a mile. I hope that you aren't doing this to yourself beginning at mile one. You are better off making it to at least 15 on stored energy and then gobbling your sugar one after another (they only are 100 calories). If you are a heavy sweater, you definitely need to look at Succeed or some other form of supplement.

I didn’t think of it that way. I still don’t really see a problem with me getting water during the race though. I wasn’t close to getting an award or anything. The race personnel didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I probably won’t do it again though. I really needed the water this time. I am sure that in the future I can learn how to be more efficient with my water intake.

Great advice on the gels and supplements. I know I was doing it all wrong. I was taking gels throughout the race. They were getting me by but just barely. I was sick that morning so I couldn’t hold anything down. I think I only got down 1 banana before the race.

I know that once I do the proper training and get my nutrition right I will be able to finally post a good time. Heck, I might even be able to post another 38 minute PR in the next race!

hey, some RD don't even have a problem with half the stuff mentioned. In the same year, my local marathon had the lead guy get a mini-massage by a volunteer and the 2nd place guy have his gf ride her bike next to him. The media even mentioned it in the story about it being against USATF, the RD replied "no one complained". 99.9% of the time, it won't be a problem. But you don't want to commit a small infraction and have that .1% a hole complain after you just poured everything into your marathon. You have enough talent that it's good for you to know some of the rules, even if they seem ridiculous.

See that's a problem. You decide a rule "seem[s] ridiculous" (although in this case it is not because the whole point of the rule is not to give one runner an advantage over another, as in getting an unofficial Gu on the course) so anyone who complains is "that .1% a hole." You can disagree, but don't be complaining about inadequate training (see above) or otherwise disparaging the person who thinks that in a race with rules the rules should be followed.
