New York, Manchester and Elyria are underway. Fleet feet to all.

Richmond is next....Good luck.

At the end of the month I will catalog the Fall races under a separate thread so our list gets a bit shorter again.

I hope everyone is enjoying nice crisp temps and the daylight that will be eluding us soon!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Yesterday we had a real-live cool front come through, with morning temps around 60, yay!

M: 8mi (9:25)
T: AM 11mi incl 6x600 (2:13 avg), PM 3mi (9:17)
W: AM 8mi (9:24), PM 3mi (8:44)
R: 12mi (8:13) incl 2x1.5mi (6:57, 6:56 pace) last 4mi
F: AM 9.12mi (9:10), PM 3mi (9:25) under the influence of soda; please don't try this unless you are racing against me
Sa: 6.5mi (9:05), 61F, ahhh
Su: 18.5mi (7:19) incl 6x.5mi bridge repeats w/ very fast running-club friend

total: 82.1 miles

I'm really happy with this week. Thursday's medium-long run could have gone better; I was tired but probably should have pushed either harder or longer. I'll make that a goal this week. This morning's long run on the bridge made me very happy.

Good luck to all those racing.

Put me back on the board, please. I'm signed up for the NCR trail marathon on 11/24. Goal again is 3:15:59 (as it will be until I BQ). Realistically though, I might back off earlier than 18 this time if I know it isn't going to happen.

(last Sunday was MCM)
M, Tu, We - Rest
Th - 6.6 (9:13mm/138bpm)
Fr - 8.2 (8:59/139)
Sa - 4.2 (9:30/139) - I'm always much slower on the treadmill
Su - 13.6 (8:42/150)

My pace/heart rate was bad all week. Hopefully it's just recovery. I feel like I lost my mojo and I'd like it back. I have the dumbest thing bothering me now: a blister/callus thingy on my right pinky toe. Ouchy.

32.6 miles, 4h53m, 8:58 avg pace, 143 bpm avg hr

My week:

M: off
Tu: off
W: 5 recovery
Th: off
F: 7 general aerobic
Sa: off
Su: iUWR Marathon, Seattle, 3:13:45. 1OA!

True, it was a small race (27, I think). But I had to really earn it. Very fun and very satisfying. Way faster than I planned to run. I think for this one I will write an RR.

And yes, this the end! No more marathons for a while.

joplus - Very nice job. I am continually impressed with how you are able to run all of your long runs so close to race pace! I bet you could click off marathons like bhearn!

gregw - I will update. GOOD LUCK! I laughed when I saw your training - for some reason I am always WAY slower on the TM too. Heal that toe up....

dcv - nice to have our first Boston trainer!!

OK, my week = SLOTH. I did little to nothing. I am loosly following Pfitz's recovery schedule. It is amazing how used to constantly running you get. I feel like it has been a month since Grand Rapids. All in all I am feeling good, but the top of my L foot feels bruised after runs. I definitely need some good down time to recover before I figure out my next goals. I also need to get back into pilates/situps/etc. every day. But for now, I enjoyed a week of nada.

M - rest
T - rest
W - 3.75 recovery
R - off
F - 4.25 recovery
Sa - rest
Su - 8 easy on the trail with DH. ALso did pilates, situps, pushups and upper body weights

Total: 16 miles

Wow Bhearn! Way to go! Hope things went well for everyone else who raced this past weekend.

GregW - best of luck with the NCRT marathon -- I did the MCM/NCRT combo in 2005 and it worked out well -- I really like the NCRT course and atmosphere. I would definitely like to do that one again.

Not much of a week for me:
M: 45 mins trails
T: 55 mins trails
W: 50 mins trails
T: 55 mins trails
F: 55 mins trails
S: 11 mi @ 8:20
S: OFF

Was planning to go longer on Saturday, but my knee was bothering me and I just felt blah, so I cut it short. Plus I wanted to watch the webcast of the OT -- but couldn't get the webcast and had to settle for the highlights on NBC later... I thought about trying to do another medium-long run on Sunday, but woke up feeling yucky again so called it off. Had a great trail run this morning though so hopefully this week will be better...

Ran the Manchester City Marathon on Sunday. It was my first race over a 10k. I spent the last three weeks obsessing over nutrition, pace, gear, pace, logistics, pace, etc. I cannot thank my family enough for putting up with me.

The weather was perfect. The course was hilly with climbs and descents in each half of the race. I thought that support was good and in spite of the many turns, and the course was on a whole well marked with a few exceptions.

I stuck to my race plan within 2 minutes, despite the course. I was cheerful all the way to mile 23, when my left HAMSTRING told ME how fast it wanted me to go. I hit thost last miles wihtout walking in 8:50, 9:03 and 8:58. Frankly I was afraid to stop, because I thought I wouldn't be able to start again.

Since this is not a race report...3:41:39, 126/517OA, 16/45 for M3034 age group.

Pleased as punch with the whole thing.

Congratulations, bhearn! You're going to be doing one of those 50 marathons in 50 days things any day now, I can tell. Any news on how the other marathons over the weekend went? (BTW, I can't get over the Olympic trials and how easy Ryan Hall made it look.)

My week started strong, took a dip due to a little excessive fatigue and overtraining, and then got back on track at the end. Love the cooler weather!

M - 5.6 m (8:12)
T - 11 m with 5 m tempo (6:39 for tempo)
W - 8.25 m (8:03)
Th - 3 easy (8:30)
F - 5 easy (8:36)
S - off
Su - 21.4 (8:17)

Total - 54.2

Didn't take any food on the long run and paid the price with extra leg pain and some nausea afterwards, but I figure my body got a crash course in better fat-burning. Oh well.

Haven't posted in a while, but I finished in 3:52:57 at MCM last weekend. Not what I was shooting for (3:30) but given I had a calf strain that cost me the last 1-2 weeks prior to my taper and ended up with a head cold the week of the marathon, probably what I should have expected. I was on pace through about 18 and was still at 3:40 until mile 24, when I crashed real hard and ended up walking most of the last 1.5 miles.

Now it's recovery time and need to get my scheduled lined up for next season.

MTP WI - Glad to hear you are back!! I hope that injury is completely healed up.

cookie, Fast Like the Wind and BrianMcN - congrats! I look forward to reading your race reports!

Hoss1961 - GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND!!

bhearn - I finally added all of your "extra" races. Nice job. Very very impressive - especially as those times have dropped as the weeks progressed. If you have any race reports, let me know. If you don't, you should consider writing a big one for the 'post-portland party."

I am partially back after a long summer of pool running due to my achilles issues. Have been able to get up to 40 miles/week and ran every day except 2 in October. Unfortunately I can't get fit enough at this point to run the whole marathon (cal international on 12/2) but will be doing the first half as part of a 2 man relay team. as a pair we are hoping to go about 3:15. although i am not sure that it really counts for a BQ......

New York City Marathon Report:

Hoping for the sub 2:40. Ended up with a 2:47 but I'm happy with that.
My friend and I arrived at the staging area at the start at around 8:30. We broke away from our group toward the blue start and the bag drop off. The next hour and twenty minutes was one of the most stressful situations I had ever been in. The UPS trucks in the drop off area were arranged in a horseshoe pattern in which there should have been one way in and one way out. Instead they made it a free for all in which people were going in either direction creating gridlock. We spent the next hour going 100 feet. People were getting nervous so they started pushing really hard. I thought we would get crushed. We kept yelling at people to remain calm.
After the bag drop it took another twenty minutes to get to where our corral was. They already had called us to the line so we were now with the 2000+ group. I found a way around it on the outside of the barriers and got us to the front into our "corral" area. While we were there I noticed a lot of people around us with numbers 10,000+. There were a lot of people in the wrong spot. I know Boston is smaller but this would never happen there.
Anyway we made it to the start and we were happy. It wasn't long before we were on our way. It took me about ten seconds to cross the line. There was some pushing but it went off pretty clean at least around us. There were some people in the front starting off at 8+ pace who were getting hit by almost every runner trying to get around them. It seemed like a very dangerous situation for them. I can't imagine why they would have wanted to be there.
First mile uphill 6:27. I knew it was going to be a slow one. Second mile was a 5:39 down the bridge. I then concentrated on getting on pace. I ran the next four in 24:13. I was right where I wanted to be only I wasn't feeling as fresh as I should have been at 10K. That's usually a precurser to the torcher I would receive later on. Sometimes it's not though so I kept rolling. The next two miles were a 6:08 and then a 6:13 I think on an uphill not sure though. At this point in Boston last year I decided to push it and go down in flames if I had to (I did). This time I decided I would really try to enjoy the race because New York could be a one time thing for me. I backed off and started running 6:20's.
Coming out of Queens into Manhatten was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had. There were people twenty deep and people up in the window and porches of the buildings. Every time you wave to them the crowd gets extremely loud. It was amazing. We talked to a friend later on who had finished around 4:30 and it was the same experience he had. They were still cheering just as loud. The crowd is unbelievable. For a regular guy like me to get cheered on like that was pretty cool.
We then took a loop into the Bronx and then back into Manhatten. I was really concentrating on holding on but I started slipping into the 6:30's to 6:40+ range. It was here that Lance passed me although I didn't really know that until after. I was in my own world at the time. Got to 22 and made a decision. Sometimes if I try to find a faster gear it actually relaxes the muscles I've been using. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I sped up and was able to pass a lot of people until I got to around 25. I started getting leg cramps that if they tied up would have stopped me. I backed off just a little bit and they seemed to get worked out over the next half of a mile. I was able to then push for the finish. Coming into the finish was incredible as the crowd was very loud. The race was a struggle but all in all it was one of the most memorable experiences ever for me.
The experience we had at the start in no way tarnished the race itself. Although if a bunch of people were trampled I would not be saying that. I hope they take note for next year so that everyone is safe.
I ended up in 251st. I'm happy with that. I was forced to sit out much of the Summer with a muscle tear so I didn't even think I would run in New York at all. Things are good.

Nice job to the others that ran this weekend.

Good luck to those with upcoming races.

Thank you runninlaw for all the hard work. It was a lot of fun to hear how everyone did. Look forward to doing it again.

Thanks for the report Brian Mcn.... Reading the first part, I said to myself I'd never want to run NY - but by the end, I might consider it. - I assume you were in the front corral for the sub-elite or whatever they call it?

Sorry you missed your goal time - but sounds like a good effort nonethess. - I have similar aspirations for Philly so it was interesting to read of your pacing.

Enjoy a rest....

First week of taper (3 weeks) out for Philly. I cut back about 20%...

Monday - 8 @ 8:12/mile
Tuesday - 8 @ 7:40/mile
Wednesday 14.1 @6:40/mile - 10 miles around 6:20
Thursday 6 @8:30/mile
Friday 10 @7:17/mile
Saturday - off
Sunday 17 Hilly @ 7:19/mile

I'm feeling pretty good - aches and pains are minimal....

Thanks! BTW, Breakers = Newport (same as Penikese and wheaton... and what happened to wheaton, BTW???).

I didn't think Breakers or Cape Cod justified a full race report. But I will write one for iUWR + overall wrap up once I get a chance. In the meantime let me just say that I worked harder than I thought I could to win it... not that it really matters; it was just a small fun run, really. The woman I beat ran every mile from 20 on faster than the last. I was dying just keeping her within striking distance... I had to run 6:17 in mile 26 to pass her.

Good luck to all the upcoming racers this weekend!

Joplus: impressive workouts! I continue to be motivated by the intensity of of your training regimen

bhearn: you are animal. Hard to believe the times you're running used to be PR for you. What do you think you could do if you put all your eggs in one basket?

Brian McN: very inspirational race report, despite falling short of your goal. You'll have Lance licked the next time! Makes me want to do NYC next year.

rbbmoose: good to see another fellow Philly runner. I was beginning to feel lonely with all the major marathons now done. Two weeks seems like an eternity

Coming off of a great training week, I was really looking forward to tapering. I've felt generally tired, but no overtrained, for the last month or so and I think I was really riding the edge last week. However, this first taper week has made a world of difference and I feel the pop back in my legs. Did about a 20% mileage cut.

Mon: off
Tue: AM - 6.1 miles @ 7:21, PM - 5.3 miles @ 10:00
Wed: AM - 30 min. pool run and core workout
Thu: 10.9 miles @ 7:31, great run, half on trails
Fri: off
Sat: 17.5 miles @ 7:17 with last 7 miles @ 6:37
Sun: 7 miles @ 7:33
Total: 47 miles

Overall, a very good tapering week. I've noticed with the weather cooling that the pace of my runs have dropped about 15 sec./mile. I was especially happy with the fast finish run on Saturday. This has become a regular tune-up workout for me two weeks out from the marathon. I do the reverse of the Boston Marathon out to Wellesley and once I pass the Newton Lower Falls Wine Co., I pick it up to MP for 7 miles. The last 10 miles were in the middle of the Noel Nor'easter, so it was fairly windy going through the Newton Hills. I was somehow able to hold MP the whole way, which is really making me confident that I can hold a 6:40 the whole way.

Well, I did train hard for Portland (3:08:50). I might have been a tad conservative on the pace, but I had tried and failed several times before to break 3:10. On a flatter course with more even splits maybe I could manage 3:06? Dunno. It will be a while 'til I run one properly trained and tapered again. The next one is likely to be Boston, which of course is not flat. Of course I would love to break 3, but I think it would take more training time than I will have available in the foreseeable future. Or more weight loss than would be desirable / smart.

I am curious what the settling point of this latest pattern would be (10-15 easy miles during the week, marathon on the weekend). But I will not find out; I'm done for a while. I talked to srlopez, a REAL Maniac (often 2/week!), at iUWR... he runs 50ish / week BETWEEN his marathons, and says he hurts if he skips runs!
