Hey guys - I hope you all raced well today! Good luck to everyone next week as well!I ran Grand Rapids today and had a great run. I went out at a 3:30 pace for the first 14 miles, then gradually picked it up and reeled 'em in. Finished in 3:26:xx. If I was physically capable of doing flips right now - I would be doing them - lots of them. I think roots had an equally (ok, way more so!) impressive day at GR too. He looked strong and was running fast. Good stuff coming, I'm sure. Race report to follow soon..... ________________________________ IN THE BOOKS: Grandmas - 6/16 RunForFun - 2:47 2:50:00 Foot Traffic Flat - 7/4 bhearn - 3:12 3:20:31 San Francisco - 7/29 Dr. Wu - 3:35 3:48:08 Lehigh River Relay - 9/9 loopy - 2:59:59 3:02:50 Adirondack - 9/16 Dr. Wu - 3:35 3:39:14 Omaha - 9/23 Travis Hubbard - 2:45-2:50 tonya921 - 3:39:59 3:22:40 Akron 9/29 mrinertia - 3:59:59 4:52:02 Toronto Waterfront - 9/30 DanMoriarity - 2:59:59 3:00:10.3 Berlin uli - 2:36 2:39 St. George - 10/06 Johnny J - 2:59:59 2:44 Chicago - 10/07 AndyHass - 2:28:38 - scrapped - life got in the way jakey - 3:15 JSM - 2:22 DNF to compete later jtv - 3:15 4:43 sack77 - 3:59:59 4:49 tramirez - 2:59:59 92heelgrad - 3:20 3:30:23 Lakefront - 10/7 RunForFun - 2:44 - out for injury Mohawk Hudson Marathon - 10/7 Dr. Wu - 3:24:59 3:29:05 Portland (OR) - 10/7 Zoomharp 3:59 4:17 bhearn - 3:10 3:08:50 Sacramento - 10/7 GoDawgGo - 2:59:59 3:01:37 Steamtown - 10/7 runawayjesse - 3:25 3:50:47 willamona - 3:45 4:08 rootsrunner - 3:03-3:08 3:16:27 Twin Cities - 10/7 joplus - 3:09:59 DNF to compete later runninlaw - 3:25 3:53:27 doctster - 3:15:59 3:23 Fast Like the Wind - training run DNF to compete later stepstep - 3:00 3:28 Baystate - 10/14 joev9 - 3:15:59 3:23:01 Gazelle2007 - 3:10:00 3:11:17 Long Beach, CA - 10/14 DAVIDR262 -3:20 arc918 -3:20 Newport - 10/20 wheaton - 3:10? Great Job runninlaw. I was a little concerned with your 2nd attempt so soon but it worked out great for you. Great job.4 weeks left for me until Memphis. Had a great Half at Inidanapolis last weekend with a 1:27:15. Mcmillan puts me at a 3:04. So I think I am right on for my 3:08. After my half I went on a cruise to the Bahamas might have gained 2 lbs but still put in 50 mpw. Now to focus on this last month and get r' done.

Congratulations, runninlaw! I am so happy for you. Looks like your decision to enjoy yourself at TCM paid off.My week: Su: off M: off Tu: 5 recovery W: off Th: 8 w/ hills & 4 @ LT F: 4 recovery Sa: off Su: Cape Cod Marathon, 3:19:05 (I think). That's 5 seconds faster than the Breakers Marathon, last Saturday. More importantly, I felt better afterwards this time -- no calf issues at all, for the first time I can remember. Yes, I am officially certifiable now -- though still rather tame by Maniac standards. (Then again, Maniacs don't tend to BQ 3 times in 4 weeks. :-D )

Congrats runninlaw on the huge PR. I'm so glad this course had a couple out-and-backs, otherwise I'd never had seen you. I wondered how you finished. Reeling 'em in is right. Looking at the preliminary results, you were 325th position at mile 13 and finished 198th. That's tremendous. bhearn- you'll earn more stars when you do two in one weekend! My week leading in: S: 9.5 miles, with 5k race (18:58 ); Cycle 11 M: Swim 1000m, Cycle 5 T: 8.5 ez (with 4x strides) W: 7 miles, with 3 @ T-pace (4x1200m; with 1 min rests) Ave T-pace = 6:24 R: 5 ez F: rest S: 3 ez, (with 4x strides) 33 miles Yes, wonderful conditions in Grand Rapids. Hey everyone. Good work, runninlaw, bhearn, corland14, and rootsrunner! This week was a good bounce back from my cold last week. My average pace has been going down a good bit, from maybe 8:30 - 8:45 in my last marathon cycle in the spring to close to 8:00 these days. I wonder if I'm pushing the pace too much, but so far training is feeling pretty good. Two more weeks before the taper. M - 7.2 @ 8:11 pace T - 15.6 @ 8:06. Great run around White Rock Lake while in Dallas for work! W - 5 @ 8:10 Th - 3.27 @ 8:15 F - 11.2 with 4.5 tempo @ 6:42 S - off Su - 18.25 @ 7:55 Total: 60.5

Great results! Congratulations runninlaw, rootsrunner, and corland14. bhearn-- I'm not sure what to say, wow, I guess. Several of you with PRs turning around after just doing marathons. Makes me wonder about the possible merits of overdistance or at least 'distance' training. Anyway, great job all, I'm glad the weather cooperated for once and you all seemed to get the pay off from your training. I'm thinking about one of two things: 1- Starting to build a huge base and really take it to the next level to see where it takes me-- injury or more PRs, with a goal of Boston next spring as a w/up and then continue building to a fall marathon as the big race for next year. OR 2- Starting a thread here on Recovering Marathon Addicts Trainers Thread-- and take a year with no marathon in mind, and try to bring down the 10k and 5k times. I'm back running, with 35 miles this week, some fast, some slow, just enjoying the un-regimented nature of the runs right now.

Way to go, runninlaw and roots. I can't wait to read the reports. Looking at the GR marathon website, it looks like a pretty neat race.bhearn: you are insane. Meanwhile, summery weather continues, though occasionally it does dip below 70F/90% RH for a few minutes. M: AM 8mi (8:53), PM 4mi (8:47) T: 8mi (8:38) W: AM 8mi (8:37), PM 3mi (8:46) R: AM 10mi incl 8x400 w/descending rests (90s --> 30s), PM: 5mi (8:51) F: 8mi (8:44) Sa: 6mi (8:53) Su: 16.38 incl half-marathon (1:31:17, 3F, some $ but I am still not happy with the time) total: 76.5 miles

Great job guys! Beating goals, PRs, negative splits. Good deal. Here's my week that concluded with MCM. Mo: 4.4 - grass Tu: 4.4 - grass We: 7.0 w/ 2 @ MP - 7:29, 7:23 Th: 4.7 - road Fr: 4.7 - road Sa: Rest Su: Marine Corps Marathon 3:27:32 (race report) The executive summary for the race is I stayed on BQ pace through 17 miles and died on Hains Point. I came through pretty unscathed except the usual trashed quads. My foot, which I was pretty worried about, seemed to have healed during the taper and didn't bother me during the race. I haven't figured out my plans yet. I swore off marathons around mile 22, but I'm over that now

Great job this weekend to those who ran. Greg W., sounds like you already have a good attitude going forward. The Marathon is a tough business. You never really can be sure when you will have your day. It was a good effort.Goal: 2:39 I hope I can take some of the energy from here to NY this weekend. M- 6 in 48 minutes T- 5 miles easy W- 8 in 59 minutes T- 10 in 64 minutes F- 4 in 33 minutes S- Off S- 5k Costume race. Ran as Batman. 17:53 controlled 36 miles for the week. Turned out to be a real steep taper. It wasn't the plan I just ran by feel this week.

Hi all, great racing!Rootsrunner and Runninlaw -- great rebound marathons! Setting PRs 3 weeks after another marathon -- very impressive. Bhearn - speaking of impressive, great maniac streak you've got going! GregW - sorry you missed the BQ, but still great job toughing it out... and beating the cow! --- My week: M: 55 mins trails T:45 mins trails W: 45 mins trails T: OFF F: 55 mins trails S: 20 mi @ 8:10 (in the dark -- spooky!) S: OFF Ran my long run at night as 1.5 mi loops on a muddy cross country course. It circles a corn field and it got pretty unnerving at times with just my headlamp for light, especially when a critter ran out from the corn stalks or a strong wind blew through them. Very seasonally appropriate with Halloween time at hand...

Excellent! HAHA. I can't tell you how many times I have said I was going to work on the 5K and 10K and then got sucked into another marathon training schedule. One of these days I will actually get my 5K and 10K times where they should be. As far as what's next for this thread . . . . Obviously we are getting closer to the end of fall. IF YOU ARE PLANNING A SPRING RACE, GO AHEAD AND GIVE ME YOUR GOALS. We may as well merge into spring training too as many of the same people will be doing it. Easier than trying to manage 2 separate threads. Plus I hate to see it die like the spring trainers thread did after Boston. There are still several people with upcoming races. Excellent pic of roots. I saw that one too. He looked smiley and strong like that every time I saw him!! Congrats again!

Great races Runninlaw and Roots and Gregw...and joplus as well. Runninlaw...I'm up for the spring thread. (does a February race count? ) The Twin Cities furnace marathon destroyed my BQ shot, but it keeps me busy and motivated over the fall and winter months.

Okay, I've been lurking for too long! I'm planning to run the BMO Vancouver marathon May 4th. This will be my first attempt at the distance, and it seems a long way off, so my goal at this moment is just to go the distance, though maybe a seven minute mile pace /sub-three if everything goes right over the next six months.

Well first of all, I don't think two in one weekend is going to happen any time soon. joplus - maybe I'm insane, but I'm not the one running 70-90 mpw! And loopy, yeah, it's a nice maniac streak... but... it still puts me at a lowly one star! I have to say, I really feel like I've entered a new phase of running. (Recap: Portland Marathon, 10/7, 3:08:50, 3 1/2-minute PR. 10K (long!), 10/14, 40:18. Breakers Marathon, 10/20, 3:19:10. Cape Cod Marathon, 10/28, 3:19:06.) I'd done marathons two weeks apart before (once), but I wasn't sure what to expect trying them one week apart. Not only do I now have confidence that I can turn around marathons quickly, I can really tell (or imagine, anyway) that I am recovering faster. Last week was not bad; today -- I don't even feel like I ran at all yesterday, let alone ran 26 miles. I've never felt like this the day after a marathon before. Probably I'm kidding myself, but I honestly feel like I could have run another today. Is this what it feels like to become a Maniac? Still, it's clear that if improving performance at every (or any) distance is the goal, running lots of marathons in quick succession is not really compatible with that goal. They're two different running objectives. From one point of view, running lots of marathons at an easy pace is like doing a long run that's a bit longer than normal every weekend, but with a huge party-and-camaraderie atmosphere attached, plus an excuse for touring a new destination. You get a lot more marathon-experience bang for your training buck. But then, so much for any quality workouts the next week. And there's something a bit dissatisfying about racing below your potential, like you're not really taking the race seriously. Shooting for a BQ each time was one way of alleviating that problem for me. I guess I'm still sorting out how I feel about this. If I'm really training myself to recover quickly after long runs, that's worth something -- right? Or maybe I'm way overanalyzing one brief streak. This time, I think I struck a nice balance. I trained hard for Portland, then rode the wave a few weeks more. I'm curious -- those of you who ran again this weekend after heat-impacted marathons three weeks ago, how is your recovery going, relative to past experience?
