Thanks guys. I'm finally starting to feel at peace with this whole thing and am getting very excited to race. Last week I was stressing out big time about what pace to run, what the weather was going to be, what's going to happen, etc. Now, I have finally decided to just let the race happen. I'm going to go out around 8:00 per mile and see how that feels and go from there.

A month ago it was BQ or die, but now I know I will still be pretty happy to just finish my first marathon. I now know I CAN BQ (when I started training I kind of wondered if it wasn't impossible) even if it doesn't happen this time around. I learned a lot from my training and am sure I will learn a lot more on Sunday. I know that if I don't BQ this time, I can take all this great experience and make it happen next time around...

Johnny J... Great race report. I know it must be totally satisfying knowing that you left EVERYTHING out there crossing the tape! 2:44... impressive. You know what will help your recover really nice?...steak and some dang quesadillas!

Runinlaw... I'll be thinking of all you guys who did what you did last weekend... knowing that 48-50 degrees at gun time is not just "average" temps in the Fall, but a BLESSING!

I hate this last week...your mind plays games with you and your race plan. The tendonitis around my ankle/p-tendon feels much better. 11 on Sunday and 5 yesterday with no pain makes me feel pretty confident that things should be all right on Sunday.

92heelgrad - great job in those conditions! I must have run with you for a few miles, as I also started with the 3:20 group.

Joplus - Sorry to hear about your DNF. That was a smart decision ( and probably what I should have done!0

runninlaw - way to "enjoy" a marathon.

Great job to all others that survived this sweltering weekend

As far as my race (if you could call it that) - I had a few good miles, a few decent miles, followed by a nice long stroll. I finished in a new PW by almost an hour, but I did survive! If you must make it official - 4:43 and change. I may post a full RR later.

I am leaning towards giving it another try, possibly at Philly. It all depends on how I feel the next few weeks.

Here's hoping all the other racers this fall have better weather!

Damn, maybe I do have a chance at that BQ. Ran the Pfitz Marathon Prep run today (7 miles with 2 at MP) in 60 degree cloudy weather (supposed to be in the low 50s at race time on Sunday). It seems like all my long runs and tempo runs were at least 75 degrees and at least 80% humidity.

Total 7 miles at 7:57 pace with the 2 at MP at 7:07. Felt totally in control and almost easy. I had tempo runs 6 weeks ago at 7:15 pace that felt way harder. My BQ pace is 7:27 so who the heck knows...

Again, congrats to all who toughed it out on a difficult race weekend. Super job JohnnyJ and bhearn for your successful races.

My blow-by-blow account is now up in the race report forum:

I think you have a good attitude, that "do or die" mentality ( which I struggle with myself from time to time ) tends to add extra tension before and during the race which you absolutely do not want.

Run relaxed, enjoy yourself and be ready to push yourself in the last few miles and see what you can do. Good luck!

The good news is my PT is pleased with the recovery. I have put another couple long runs in, and the body seems to be holding up. I am getting some confidence back that a DNF is not likely. I am however officially adjusting my time goal to 3:55:59. It's not as fast as I would have hoped, but I think backing the pace 30 secs off per mile will make me more likely to finish and less likely to strain something. One thing is for sure though I am skipping running on Wednesday until the marathon is complete.

JoeV,
I picked up my stuff last night...I am bib no. 736 so maybe we'll catch up right before/after the race.

If we don't catch up before then...have a good race! The temps look to be in our favor. Looks like we may have some 10mph+ winds, but based on the direction of the wind, we should have decent protection/benefit from the wind for at least 60%+ of the course based on the double- loop with the last 10k being heading SE with a projected SW wind!

However, I'll believe the weather when I FEEL it as NE has "issues" when it comes to the weather!

I won't be picking up my # till Sunday morning but I will keep an eye out for you. Wish I stood out more in a crowd but I will be the nervous guy with a buzz cut wearing blue shorts, a grey under armour t-shirt, and mizuno shoes. That should be easy to find, no???

I find that in the morning, before the dewpoint dips, it may be 45, but feel like 40. That...along with a potential head/cross wind for the first 8 miles would make my hands/head feel pretty cold. I'll probably bring hat and gloves that I can toss after mile 7, but might end up wearing the gloves only. Once you hit the back side of the first loop, you should warm up a bit with the wind on your back and only 5 miles left (13-18) with wind in your face.

OK, I finally finished my Portland RR:

http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/010675.shtml

Warning, it is very long. The most important detail other than targeting 3:10 and running 3:08:50 is that I ran a 2-minute negative split, on a course that is conventionally positive split. Basically, conditions were great, my training had gone as planned, and I was healthy. I count myself very lucky among those who ran marathons last weekend.

My training week up to the marathon was standard Pfitzinger taper, nothing noteworthy.

92heelgrad - Congratulations on the big PR! 3:30 is a major accomplishment for this year's Chicago, and I'm sure most people missed their targets by much more than 10 minutes (if they finished at all).

runninlaw - I don't envy your race conditions either. I'm glad you were able to turn it into an "awesome ride". And thanks again for running this thread for so long!

joplus - I think you made a smart call. Good luck if you go for Jacksonville. You are more than set for 3:10 on a decent day.

stepstep - Congrats on toughing it out at Twin Cities. In those conditions, I think you blew up less than most.

Doctor Wu - Congrats on the sub-3:30! Good luck at Philadelphia.

zoomharp - Congrats on the PR! Sorry about your stomach trouble. Portland was a great course, wasn't it?

rootsrunner - Sorry you were not feeling your best. I think you did a great job to run the first half in 1:31:20, not too fast.

Johnny J - Incredible race! A 4-minute negative split?! Awesome. Congratulations on the PR!

loopy - Great 50K! 8th overall, impressive.

GoDawgGo - Wow. Maybe you didn't have to run in Chicago-level heat, but at 75 degrees, all my time goals would be out the window. To still run very close to sub-3 is very impressive. And I don't know about "at age 42, I am not going to get any faster". I just turned 42, and I plan on getting faster. I would like to run sub-3 some day.

Edit - runawayjesse - Sorry I missed you the first time! Congrats on your first marathon. "Honestly I thought marathoning would be easier. The training was hard, the race was even harder." -- well, ideally, the race is easier. It's a cruel joke when mother nature doesn't cooperate.

Bob

Great race and report Bob! Way to go. Maybe you should take up a second career as a pace setter...You had the race nailed in your mind before the gun went off and then you put the process in motion...I would have loved to have had your splits in those last few miles :-)

Enjoy your downtime. I am feeling pretty good myself, but I am resisting the urge to run. Easier this time around than it has been in the past...

Thanks runninlaw! It's hard to be disappointed with a 7+ minute PR, but part of me is. It's good motivation, though. My plan is to run the Myrtle Beach marathon in February. It was my first marathon ever in February of this year, and it would be nice to go back and BQ for a one year reunion.

To everyone with races this weekend and the next few weeks...best of luck to you!
