I had a sinus infection and then one head/chest cold after another. My whole family was a mess, really. Of course I got another nasty head cold in the days before the race and I was just miserable (ouch - especially the plane trip to Beantown). I know a lot of people say "wash your hands alot," "stay away from people," etc., but especially when you have little kids it can be tough, if not impossible to stay healthy. This is especially true during the taper when your body is in shock. I am sharing this info b/c I have tried something different this time around. Both of my kids started getting the typical head colds, sore throat, head aches as soon as school started a month ago. I have been extra careful with them, but starting last week, when I started feeling a minor head cold coming on, I also started taking an "immunity booster." It is basically a vitamin with lots of vit c, zinc, and some other common immunity boosters (what I have is a generic version of "Airborne"). I have been taking it once a day (it says you can take it up to 3-4 times a day). I don't know how much it has helped, but I am NOT sick. You guys may want to try something like that if you are just starting to feel the signs of illness or if you tend to get sick during taper. For $5 at Target, it could be well worth it. I was amazed at the selection of products like this out there this season - it must be something new. Placebo effect? Maybe, but so far it is working. I thought I'd share in case any of you are interested. ~R
I'll add my own suggestion too. I swear by Cold-eeze (zinc lozenges). If I start using them at the first sign of a cold, I often don't even get the cold (or it's really mild). It may be a placebo effect, but hey, I don't care *why* it works

Congrats uli on your exploits in Berlin! Oh to be 'fairly happy' with a 2:39 !! Pity you're not running Dublin. The hills are what make it fun, or so I keep telling myself.

I don't think you crossed a line with the vacation day to run (maybe all the driving afterwards which seems insane). I had a "doctor's appt." last week so I could get my 20 mile run in. Needless to say, I didn't get much work in that afternoon when I returned to work...

I love it Bob! All that I ask is that when you start struggling in your perfect weather...please think of all of all of us in the cruddy heat, humidty, wind, all of the above! I guarantee it will move your legs moving faster home too! Seriously, I wish you an awesome race! For everyone else, GOOD LUCK!! Not that you need it. You are strong and ready. Rest, carb load, be strong and smile!!! I too am apprehensive about the weather, but I laughed when I saw a post in basic training re the best race sign you saw: "This seemed like such a good idea 6 months ago." and it will again when we re-evaluate our goals for next season.....Didn't we all see 40-50 degrees for October? Global warming dammit! Oh yeah - last year there was 3 feet of snow at this time.... D@mn marathoning! Rock on.... And good luck.

Best wishes to you Bob for a successful Sunday. Kick some a** out there!
Weather in Sacramento looking pretty good. Low of 48; high of 78. Hopefully no wind. Did my last long run on Wednesday for depletion. Carbo loaded yesterday and 2 EZ runs planned for today and tomorrow. Looks like I will be ready to go come Sunday. I am running the race with my 72 year old Dad. This will be his first marathon. I imagine I may end up running over 30 miles on Sunday if I can find him on the course after my race is done. Good luck to all runners this weekend.

Haven't checked in in a while, but just letting you all know I am still going for it. I recovered from my injury fully with just 2 weeks that suffered at all. I have done enough (but not as many as I would have liked) long runs. I am going for one more and then the taper. I just hope that this hot weather goes away by the 20th. At 35-60 F I am confident in my goal. But if the weather is like it has been this week (65+ even in the early morning) then it is highly unlikely that I can keep 7:15 pace.
