I have no explanation for the slow race, it was a fairly fast course, good weather, I felt good, ran hard, everything was great except the time. C'est la vie I guess.

Thanks. Well, the short version is I went out on pace for 3:12 (which would be a PR), but given the heat (62 at start, 71 at end, little to no shade) I knew it was pretty likely that would not happen, and I would evaluate at the half. Indeed, at the half it was clear that 7:20 pace would not be sustainable, so I dialed it back to 7:45. (Plus my first-ever potty stop in a race had made 3:12 unreachable anyway.) Towards the end the increasing heat got to me, and I slowed some more, coming in at 3:20:31. (Hey, another BQ!) A lot of people had a pretty bad day, and plenty dropped out. There were some course management issues. I was 17/137 finishers, 3 AG (but there were no AG awards). I'm told the field at this marathon is pretty fast. Was it worth messing up my training for Portland? This early, I don't think disrupting this week's schedule is a big deal, and I did get in a nice 20+er. Plus I got to meet lots of Marathon Maniacs. I'll have to see how next week's schedule feels, though. After seven marathons, I think recovery is getting easier each time. I went out for a hike yesterday (one day post-marathon) and felt pretty good. Bob
