Topic: 10K Race List (Certified and Fast) |

The idea for list was inspired by the "2007 Sub 40 10k Goal Thread". http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum5/HTML/003883.shtmlAnyone, of course, is welcome to use it or submit races. These are the criteria: 1. CERTIFIED - This is a must. Please submit only races that you KNOW are certified. All-comers on track are okay. 2. FAST - No major hills, poor footing, or otherwise slow courses. Flat is preferred, but gently rolling or small hill is okay as long as the course has a reputation for being fast. ___________________________________________________ STATE - CITY - DATE - RACE NAME - CONTACT INFO CA Kentfield - May 28 - Marin Memorial Day 10k - at College of Marin - PAUSATF Series race CA Sonoma - Jun 03 - Hit The Road Jack - http://www.hittheroadjack.org/ CA Pleasanton - Jun 17 - Rotary Sprit 10k - www.onyourmarkevents.com CA San Francisco - Jun 17 - Presidio Relay - http://www.presidiorelay.com/ CA Palo Alto - Jun 30 - Masters Championships (Track) - http://www.pausatf.org/data/2007/mtfchamps07.html CA San Francisco - Sep 16 - Banana Chase 5k/10k - http://upcoming.org/event/123839/ CA Paso Robels - Sep 23 - Heritage Oaks Bank - http://www.hobfunrun.com/race10kmasters.asp GA Atlanta - Jul 04 - Peachtree - http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/at02000.htm IA Ames - Jul 07 - Midnight Madness - http://www.iowagames.org/SummerGames/RoadRace.aspx ME Portland - Aug 04 - Beach to Beacon - http://www.beach2beacon.org/beachtobeacon/index.html MI Ann Arbor - Jun 03 - Ann Arbor Run - also has half marathon and 5k NC Raleigh - Nov 11 - Old Reliable Run - http://www.unitedwaytriangle.org/run/race_info.asp UT Salt Lake City - Jul 24 - Deseret News 10K - http://deseretnews.com/run/ WI Green Bay - Jun 09 - Bellin Run - http://www.bellinrun.com/ (2006 site all I could find) WI Menasha - Aug 11 - Otto Grunski Runski - http://www.cityofmenasha-wi.gov/content/departments/parks_&_recreation/(2)recreation_programs/(20)otto_grunski_runski.php

Jim- Add this one for CT If a flat and fast 10K is what you want and you're in CT on this day, then do the Simsbury River Run. I ran it last year and it's pretty darn flat and fast. (oh, and it's certified, of course-for a real PR it's a must) April 30th, 2007--Simsbury River Run - 5K/10K - Noon - Simsbury - (860) 241-8646

Deseret News 10k (Salt Lake City, UT) July 24, 2007.Downhill, frequently downwind as well with the early morning winds out of the canyon. Haven't run it, but I hear lots of PR's run on that course. Here's an example: Results of 10k Olympic Trials 2004 Teren Jamison: 29:26 One week later Des. News 10k: Teren Jamison: 27:48 (there was a tailwind that year). But you can see, it can be a very fast course even for the very fastest runners. Only downside is the altitude (around 4800' I think). [This message has been edited by Johnny J (edited Jan-12-2007).]

JohnnyI think that's the 2006 date. I couldn't find anything for 2007. The 24th for this year would be on a Tuesday. Maybe they will update their site when the race gets closer. I know that there are several around here that you usually can't find anything on early in year, but they start posting stuff later on.

The fastest I have run is the Otto Grunski Runski 8/11/07 Menasha WI - Certified - Flat - not too many turns. You can use this page to find certified courses by distance and city/state:http://www.usatf.org/events/courses/search/ I'd say the NYRR Race to Liberty can be pretty fast, since it's very flat with only a few turns. But it's very popular and can be pretty crowded. The Newport 10,000 in Jersey City is probably the fastest certified 10K course in the NY metro area

I have run the Bellin for 15 straight years and live on the course and 1/2 mile from start and 1/4 mile from finish. Much of my running is done on the course. It's not a terribly hard course but a bit deceiving as first 2 miles are on a slight upgrade. What's my excuse for not breaking 40 min on it? This year might be the year! ------------------ My Profile

Jim,
You're correct. They haven't posted this year's date yet. However, it is always on the 24th. July 24th is a holiday in Utah (Pioneer Day, celebrating the entrance of the Mormon Pioneers into Salt Lake Valley). Unless it falls on a Sunday in which case they usually celebrate it that Monday. jj

Thanks for link. That will take some study--it shows the courses but doesn't tell you if or when races will be held on those courses. I was able to find one clost to home though--will look at it some more later.

1. No. It has to be an official race. 2. Yes, if the pacer is properly registered for the race, and starts at the beginning (NOT like the relay system provided for Saint Lance).

I have the same problem. I can't do well on that course!!! Of course, my preference is an actually hills (my best Bellin is the year they added the extra one), rather than a steady uphill climb and I "like" turns. My goal is to win my age-group there. I think I had a good chance last year (I think the winning time was over 39:00), I just didn't think I was recovered from my marathon. I think the key is to take those first 2 miles quite easy, but it's difficult with that size at the start. sue

Jim, I wanted to pass along this information regarding the Simsbury run in CT... The date was changed and moved up one week to Sunday April 22nd. I know this is the correct date as I received the flyer via snail mail. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APR 22 - SUN River Run - 5K/10K - Noon - Simsbury - (860) 241-8646 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alas, I won't be running as I am on call that weekend at the hospital. Ironically, my call schedule was made so I could have the race weekend off...the next week. I am still recovering from a quad tear. ~3 -4 weeks and counting. I have not really run since then so all race plans are in doubt. Best to you all. Dale

I fixed it, DaleSorry to hear that the quad tear is lingering. You will overcome it, though, I am sure, and many good years of racing are still ahead of you. All your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Let me know of any more fast, certified 10k's you would like me to list. For any Californians or those who like to travel, I just added 2007 USATF Pacific Association Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships. They will be held on June 30 at 7 am in Palo Alto. A great opportunity for a fast 10k under same conditions that Olympics, World Cup and other big ones are run.

Thanks for the new CA suggestions. I can't make the first but the second is a possibility for me. That would make it three attempts in three weeks! But a 7am start? I'd love to run a race on a track though. Have you, or anyone, ever been to these championships before? Would it be embarrassing to be aiming for a sub-40 10k amidst a buch of track stars or is it a more eclectic mix. Some of the results from previous years make it look like it would be okay to compete. But a 7am start...

You have to put aside your ego if you want to race on the track. I've had plenty of practice getting lapped over the years while running all-comers meets at Los Gatos. Usually there is a wide variety of ablities, though, and someone to try and match strides with. I tentatively plan on being there and sub-40 is looking like a long shot for me at this point. Yes, 7 am is pretty earlier but better than noon under the sun. I'll confirm in later posts if I will be there. If you decide to run, let me know and we can chat a little before duking it out

I may join you on the track.....Another possibility for your fast and certified 10k list is the June 17th Presidio relay at the San Francisco Presidio at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge: http://www.presidiorelay.com/ which features both 5k and 10k races as well as the various relays. I'd call the course fast, and it is certified. This will be my first June attempt at a sub-40 10k.

Have you run that one before? I would expect it to be a slow course even thought it is flat. In looking at the the map it seems that a lot of it is next to the beach on dirt. I ran a certified 5k down there in '05 and averaged only a couple seconds a mile faster than I did in a HM the week before. Maybe I was a bit leg weary from the half but it sure didn't seem like a fast course. I've also ran Presidio 10-mile there while in my 40's and averaged about 10 sec a mile slower than HM pace.

Ok you asked for it! Here is the fastest 10K I know of in the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill Area! It is the Old Reliable 10K. It is run mostly on Hillsborough street near the NC State Bell Tower. It has gently rolling hills as you can see from the profile below. The course was changed to its now permanent route last year. The course was fast before but now it finishes on one of the most beautiful and fast streets in Raleigh. If you want to know how fast it is and was just look at these results. 1 1470 CHRIS SEATON M 25 RALEIGH NC 30:03 30:04 4:51 2 713 DEVIN SWANN M 24 RALEIGH NC 30:30 30:31 4:55 3 737 LEVENTE TIMAR M 26 RALEIGH NC 30:50 30:50 4:58 4 1375 MATT KERR M 28 WINSTON-SALEM NC 30:58 30:59 5:00 5 1399 BRIAN ST.ONGE M 27 RALEIGH NC 31:07 31:07 5:01 6 550 DAVID PATTERSON M 24 CARY NC 31:49 31:50 5:08 7 1478 PAUL JONES M 29 APEX NC 32:17 32:17 5:12 8 194 DEREK FENTON M 34 RALEIGH NC 32:20 32:21 5:13 9 259 CONRAD HALL M 33 DURHAM NC 33:25 33:26 5:23 http://www.runnc.com/Sites/7/results/orr10k.txt Oh yea and the most incredible time!
