I should add "but not TOO often." The last time I said "race more often" it was interpreted as "race a LOT". No, I don't think racing every weekend is good either. Not too much, not too little. Isn't that the way it is for most things?

Just checking in...I'm doing my first 10K of the year this weekend, but I'm not expecting to break 40. I'm tapering for Boston now, but I'm not at the weight or the fitness I should be. Too much travel and illness this training cycle; too many runs missed. I ran a 5K a week and a half ago in 19:49. I was targeting 19:40ish + kick; I blame the discrepancy on the fact that I planned to check my Garmin on the km splits, but the course was marked in miles. I averaged 3:53/km by the Garmin. Well, my secondary goal was not to embarrass myself, and at least break 20. McMillan equates that to a 41:10 10K... surely I'm in better shape than that. This weekend I'll likely pace for 40:40 - 40:50 and see what happens. BTW, PR is 40:00.0, run one week after Boston last year. Bob

Good luck, Bob. I'm pulling for ya!My 5k PR is 20:00, so I can understand being right on the edge of breaking through a barrier, and the frustration that goes with it. ------------------ My User Profile Sub-40 10k Blog

Bod,Good luck and just run your race. Last year a ran a 5k a month before I ran the Bellin 10k. My time at the 5k was 20:16. At the Bellin 10k i ran a 40:27 with my split at the 5k being 19:55. Yeah i beat my time for my last 5k and PR in the 10k all in one race. My point is just go out there and have fun, because on race day crazy things can happen. If your relaxed and stick to your running plan you are sure to put your best foot foward on that day. Everyone has bad training cycles, which sometime result in a bad string of races. Just have to work through it and before you know it you are hitting another PR.

Count me in. I'll turn 51 this year and have to baby a variety of whiny body parts but my goal is to break 40 by September then see how close I can get to 1:30 for the half marathon in October. Good luck everyone!

Hi Everyone,Well, I did it! I actually won the 10K on Sunday in 38:53 - a 4+ minute PR!!!! I would have been happy with anything under 40, but didn't expect to break 39. I'm feeling a little beat up this week, so I'm just trying to take it easy. Is there a sub-19 5K thread? That's my next goal. Good luck to everyone - I'll be checking back to see who's met their goals! Life is good!!!!!!!!!!

I just joined the site yesterday. I have been running 33 years. I have done sub 40's, not sure of my exact PR but 38 and change several times, but that was 20 years ago. I havn't run a 10k in 20 years.I peaked out on my speed and started running marathons and longer, so far 24 marathons and 26 Ultras. Next year I turn 50 and decided to do something new so why not another sub 40 10k? I am increasing my miles during the week and plan a test race at the end of April or begining of May.

Oh my god, Diane, you absolutely killed it! Congratulations! I would love to hear more details about how your race went. For example, did you try to run a conservative pace at the start, or did you just go for it? What were your splits? A 4-minute PR is insane. How has your training changed since your last 42:xx minute 10k? Inquiring minds want to know... ------------------ My User Profile Sub-40 10k Blog

Congratultions, Diane, on being the first graduate of '07. You certainly lived up to the high expectations. This 10k puts you at sub-19 for 5k already, so I think you need a more ambitious goal. Sub-30 for 8k might be a good one. That's just a little easier than sub-18 for 5k. Also, you are in sub-3 marathon territory now. Before you take off, how about giving us a little summary of your training, e.g. weekly mileage and what your key workouts were. Again, congratulations, and good luck to you as you continue your climb [This message has been edited by Jim24315 (edited Mar-30-2007).]

Thanks, Dakota Ridgerunner & Jim! I don't have my splits - I accidentally erased them from my watch. My plan had been to go out somewhat conservatively, but that went out the window when two other women took off. I didn't want to get left in the dust, so I went out a bit faster than intended (6:08 first mile). I passed one woman just after the first mile and the other one at 2 miles. I don't remember my splits, except the 5 mile mark, which I passd in about 31:15. I remember thinking to myself that I just set a 5 mile PR. The last mile was hard - just trying to hang on. I think I ran 7:33 for the last 1.1 miles (don't know what pace that translate to). My training was basically concentrated on consistency and on building a solid base. I run about 7-8 miles 5 days a week, take Saturday's off and do a longish run (12-15 miles) on Sundays. I don't do any speedwork.

Yeah!!! Go Diane!!! That is such an amazing improvement. You think it was just the consistency of moderate mileage that did it? I hope I get the same effect!! Wow!! AWESOME!!!

Hmm, that fast on no speedwork. You've got a very well-baked cake, to borrow an analogy I've seen before. Add some icing (the speedwork) and you will be seriously fast.------------------ My User Profile Sub-40 10k Blog

40:17 (my timing) in the sun run. Sooo close! Given the setbacks I've had this year, I'm not complaining.

Well I thought I had a chance at the sub 40:00 10K this past weekend. The course was new to me but it has some flat sections that go right next to a lake. I started out pretty fast but most of the first mile was downhill so I was hoping to bank some time early. The first hill slowed me down a lot but I still managed a 6:15. Then I absolutely flew back down that hill on the second mile.As I came up on the second mile I was feeling pretty good. Then I heard 11:50…11:51…..11:52. I couldn’t believe it! I knew I was going fast down that hill but I thought I couldn’t have been going that fast! It got me pumped up though and I really started to hammer the flat sections. When I came up on the 5 mile marker I heard 30:24….30:25….30:26. I know I yelled a bit in excitement. How could I possibly have almost 10 minutes to complete the last 1.2 miles and still break 40:00. It seemed too easy. I ended up finishing in 38:50 and let me say I was ecstatic! My wife was congratulating me and I really felt great. I went over to check the results and that is when I got the news. The race director said that there had been a mistake and the “certified” course had been marked wrong and that it was somewhere between .32 and .40 miles shorter than 6.2 miles. I was pretty disappointed then. I had been excited for nothing. In the end I probably ran closer to a 41:00 than a 39:00. I felt like I had a good run but I really wish the course had been accurate. Oh I failed to mention that I am trying to break 40:00 while pushing my 3.5 year old son in a jogging stroller. I came fairly close with a 40:56 last year but I will probably have to wait about 6 months before I can find another 10K in the area. I guess I will just have to work on the sub 19:00 5K with the double stroller goal until then. Great job to those who have already broken 40:00 this year. At least, I know how I will feel when I finally break it! ------------------ My Profile

I imagine that without a stroller you would have no problem breaking 40 minutes, 'drivingforce... As for myself, Jim, I was pretty happy even though I didn't make the arbitrary goal of 40 minutes (the year is yet young). I came back from ITBS last fall and was at nearly 20mpw in mid March at which point the cold I'd be harbouring turned into a chest infection and I went two weeks with almost no running. Of course, when I came back I was a little too keen and aggravated the ITB. A week before I had a long weekend and used it to fix up my bike thus saving some cardio fitness in the intervening time. Most of my runs were in the 7:45 to 8:30/mile range, and I did a couple of tempo runs which were 4 miles @ around 6:45 (my half-marathon target race pace). So, I have a half marathon in 3 weeks and I'm thinking about another 10k for mid-june or thereabouts. Keep those posts coming, it's definitely part of the motivation having others in the same boat...

nockee, If you can hit your target pace of 6:45 for that half, it would put you in sub-40 territory for 10k. Daniels says 39:59, McMillan says 39:45. Keep us posted on your progress, and good luck.Jason, Nice race, but you might need to have someone watch the boys for about 40 minutes while you make a run at your goal. In my experience 40:50 seems like a light year away from 39:59. I've had 40:24, 40:50, 40:51, 40:53, 40:58, and 40:59 within the past year. I'm not going to do the Zoo Zoom 10k tomorrow as previously planned. It's a long drive and I have a 5k next weekend. I ran 4 miles on a very fast course last Sunday in 25:25, which is in 40:20's 10k range per Daniels. At this point I'm probablly looking at something more like 40:35-45 on an average fast course. I might run a HM or 10k on May 5 or 6, then wait until Memorial Day 10k in Marin for best shot at sub-40.

Well I know 40:50 is not really that close to 39:59 but I think I will stick with the stroller for awhile longer. A goal is a goal. I am pretty sure I could do the sub 40 without the stroller but where is the fun in that?

Apple blossom isn't for another week. I'm undecided on running it, as I have had some foot problems and I am not fit. Thanks for the thoughts. Southern Man ------------------ We're on a road to nowhere. Come on along.
