OK - my race is in ASHLAND, WI Saturday on a trail. This seriously bums me out:

Winter Storm Warning

/O.EXT.KDLH.WS.W.0004.061011T0930Z- 061012T2300Z/ ASHLAND-IRON- 430 AM CDT WED OCT 11 2006
...WINTER STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CDT THURSDAY...

THE WINTER STORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CDT THURSDAY.

SNOWFALL OF 6 TO 9 INCHES IS EXPECTED ACROSS MAINLY NORTHERN PARTS OF ASHLAND AND IRON COUNTIES IN THE SNOW BELT TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY. AREAS INLAND AND RIGHT NEAR THE WATERFRONT WILL SEE 3 TO 6 INCHES. MORE SNOW IS EXPECTED THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY... AND THE WARNING MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED. THE HEAVIEST AMOUNTS WILL LIKELY BE IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN FROM BIRCH HILL...EAST ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHERN IRON COUNTY.

IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY SNOW...WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS UP TO 30 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED STARTING THIS AFTERNOON. THE STRONG WINDS WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL START AS RAIN IN THE MORNING...AND THEN GRADUALLY CHANGE TO ALL SNOW.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE EXPECTED. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS.

Runninlaw--oh man. That sucks. I would be bugging out myself. However, as far as weather predicitions go it is still early. We have to think that the likelihood of snow on October 12 sticking around is pretty slim. The ground is still probably pretty warm. Even with that much snow, it will probably be wet snow and melt on contact or shortly thereafter. However, just in case maybe have a back-up plan. Just to cya I might look at possible alternative marathons going on the next week. Sometimes it helps me think I'm dejinxing by having a back-up plan and being open to the worst case scenario. At the same time though, remember it's still early to nail down Saturday's weather! You're going to BQ this fall--weather be damned!

Looks like Des Moines for me. It is pricey, but weather looks more manageable (so far). Upside is there are pace groups....downside is hilly 1st half. But, I think I am going to go for it. Rather than have a crappy 5 hour walk through 6 inches of snow!

Has anyone here run that one?

I checked out the course in Des Moines and it turns out I've run the last 4 miles a couple of months ago when I was there for work. It's quite pretty--follows a lake and then a river and then up into the downtown area. There will be a bit of hillage in those miles but mild and I imagine when you come up from the river and over the bridge there should be a decent amount of spectators cheering you on. I can picture it being pretty cool.

We'll miss you in Columbus, but you have to do what you have to do to get that BQ! (sorry--bad attempt at poetry )

Is that 30mph wind at least a tailwind?

Seriously, that sucks.
