I'm generally a healthy eater but when people find out that I drink coffee they usually snicker or say something along the lines of, "well my vice is ice cream..". It seems to be an accepted truth that coffee is bad for you. Is it the caffeine? Will my teeth turn black in 10 years? I haven't heard much about this subject, what about you guys? What's the official word from the official guy with the official results from the official study...

...gulp..."mmm coffee"

Coffee is good for you and tea is good for you. Numerous studies have supported their various health benefits and have not supported old wives' tales about their detriments. Coffee will not stain your teeth (but lots of black tea might). Caffeine in moderate doses is not at all harmful unless you're sensitive to it (actually, regular coffee has more benefits than decaffeinated).

I second Ariann. I drink Peet's Organic Gaia every morning (two cups) before I run. Whoooppeee! No, seriously, it's really mild (best coffee I've ever had as they don't burn the beans like Starbucks tends to do in their rush to market), so much so, in fact, that I don't have to eat anything with it and just hit the road.

In moderation, and barring any gastric upset to drinker, coffee is fine and dandy and helps you keep your marbles a little longer as you age.

Tea is lovely as well.

I tend to stay away from drinking coffee prior to running for a few reasons. I figure the caffeine might mess with my heart rate and/or glucose metabolism and coffee also tends to induce bowel movements for me. Don't know if it does that to anyone else.

I would like to point out that all things are bad for you in excess...

Of course I also tend to be skeptical about most studies so take what i say with a grain of salt...(which also happens to be bad in the publics eye and yet necessary for runners)

From the WeBMD article:

In other words, consume enough caffeine -- whether it's from coffee or another source -- and you will likely run faster, last longer and be stronger. What's enough? As little as one cup can offer some benefit, but the real impact comes from at least two mugs, says Graham. By comparison, it'd take at least eight glasses of cola to get the same effect, which isn't exactly conducive for running a marathon.

But the harder you exercise, the more benefit you may get from coffee. "Unfortunately, where you see the enhancing effects from caffeine is in hard-working athletes, who are able to work longer and somewhat harder," says Graham, who has studied the effects of caffeine and coffee for nearly two decades. "If you a recreational athlete who is working out to reduce weight or just feel better, you're not pushing yourself hard enough to get an athletic benefit from coffee or other caffeinated products."

Caffenated coffee does that to me as well, and that's why I drink some a few hours before a race.

I don't give a rat's a$$ what "they" say - coffee is my big vice...and I'm ok with that !

Why do they have to take everything away ? Why does everything good turn out to be bad for you somewhere along the line ? I don't eat crap, I don't drink myself down, I don't....well, you get the picture. Leave the coffee alone !!!! It's not like I'm drinking a double double or something....

that's a good idea.... must experiment...

I can't say I've never sprinted to the starting line from the porter potties hoping the race doesn't start before I get there.

I don't drink coffee, but I do have a couple Diet Mt. Dews during the day and finish off at night with a 12-pack of Jolt Gum (2 pieces = 1 cup of coffee).

Run in the morning sans caffeine, but will pop a few pieces of Jolt Gum before races.

Caffeine may be associated with overtraining. Many runners are overtrained, which is related to over-stimulation of the adrenal and sympathetic nervous systems. Caffeine adds to that imbalance, which can be a significant problem.

Bingo! It's an integral part of my pre-race routine. I make sure to time it perfectly, too, so that I'm in the stall at just the right time. I turn into a princess on race day

Caffeine raises fats in the blood, which can help you burn more during a race (conserving glycogen).

Caffeine is also addicting -- try going a day without it Not that addiction is always bad.

Interesting comments here. Much appreciated re;caffeine.

I don't do coffee, as I detest hot beverages. I did have a sample of an iced coffee once and the effect was astounding! I was ready to scrub the entire house, roof included. Kind of scary....

Now beer is much worse than coffee and God knows, I love it!

I'm a longtime coffee drinker and coffee lover, and I find that it doesn't adversely affect either my health or my running performance (such as it is--I only log about 10-12 mi per week).

I share one of my favorite quotes. When someone told the philosopher Voltaire that coffee was a slow poison, he responded: "It must be! I've been drinking it for nearly sixty years."

Coffee is bad for runners in my opinion. Caffeine reduces the bloods capacity to absorb Iron. Iron carries oxygen through your veins. If you think this is just minimal think of what everyone already knows coffee increases your heart rate it's a pick me up. Could it be the heart rate increases because it has to inorder to provide your body with the same amount of oxygen it is accustomed to. Sort of like running increases your heart rate. Coffee = Bad for runners

what's so unique about runners? caffeine changes the intestine's ability to absorb iron (which sometimes is not a bad thing). you mean the arteries, not the veins (there's more iron in the arteries). caffeine improves the body's ability to use oxygen. now i feel like an editor...and i don't even drink coffee

Your body absorbs iron more easily if you eat it with foods that have vitamin C (oranges, grapefruit, cantaloupe, strawberries). Have a glass of
orange juice with your oatmeal or add fruit and toasted nuts to a spinach salad.
Water is essential to good health. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Avoid caffeine drinks (like pop, tea and coffee) that prevent your
body from absorbing important nutrients.

http://www.sysindia.com/kitchen/nutrients.html
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin which transports oxygen though the body.
Vitamin C helps absorb Iron. Iron is essential for functioning of all body cells, and
is essential for the respiration of tissues and the transportation of oxygen.
This can be found in the following foods:

I couldn't find anything that states Caffeine helps the body utilize Oxygen. Pehaps you own a coffee shop.....don't blame you for not drinking the stuff. Afterall a crack user would make a poor pusher
