more advice guys - dont be afraid of good ole lean protein - he is a fan of that as a major food/energy source. You dont need to go vegatarian just make sure you pick lean protein and of course watch the serving size.I know many people that get into trouble when they try to eat too few calories from protein. just my 2 cents for expereince Mom of Scooby - great results !!! way to go !! I bet it has changed your life - taught you how to eat for life - correct?? thats the best part of the plan- it is not a diet - it is a life style change

I was having a hard time coming up with different sources of lean protein so I decided to try some of the meatless meals for some variety. I eat a lot of chicken and tuna and sometimes have scrambled egg whites for dinner but that can get a little boring. Once the temps get cooler and I can turn the oven on again, I'm planning to get a turkey breast and cook that occasionally. I also eat a lot of stews and veggie chili during the colder months and use the crock pot a lot so that will give me more variety. I really like steak but usually splurge and get ribeye which is definitely not a lean cut so I'm avoiding it for now. I'm not really fond of beans so that's not an option. Do you have any other suggestions?

I was just thinking this morning that it's the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. My daughter worked at the gym this summer and I had been going for a while and seen results of other people who had been, but I had been reluctant to spend the money.

So what happens if you are out on a 3+ hour run or ride? What do you do then?I'm training for a marathon and 1/2 ironman in October and a few more marathon and then ironman next year. I'm out on my bike for as much as 7-8 hours sometimes, but just once a week. Does the book suggest anything for that? I'm very interested in the plan because it seems like everyone has had such great results. I have less than 10 lbs to lose (5'5', 134, 26 yr old), but it is definitely the hardest weight to lose!

I always keep bags of frozen shrimp in my freezer to have in a pinch and I also eat a lot of lean cuts or pork. I have been lucky because all summer, with their jobs, my kids have hardly been home for dinner, so I just throw whatever amount I need on the Foreman grill and it cooks up in minutes. I have been keeping everything very simple as that works best for me.

Oh yeah, I forgot pork. I've been having that too occasionally. Last night they had a few packages of pork loin marked down so I bought those. The other thing that I have that is good is chicken sausage. It's a little fattier than the other meats but if I plan for it I'll eat less fat the rest of the day. And I try to have that for lunch on the weekend so I can grill it and also burn off the calories during the day. I'm also curious about what you do when the cardio is hours long. I don't remember reading anything about that in the book but I'll have to double check tonight.

Mostly he says to have a good quality carb the day before, like a sweet potato and a bar or half a bar midway through. This is the part that really helps to go to him, because he can adjust the plan. I do think it is geared a bit more toward focusing on the muscle leaning rather than endurance, but again, at that point it's when you go individually. I know he was always asking my daughter how she was recovering from the long runs and stuff. And after I ran 11 miles one time, he said that I would have been better to have half a bar midway through the run than after.

I think I'll try calling and see if I could work something out so that I could go once and then follow up thru email. It's about 1 1/2 hrs for me so too far to drive every week. Of course with the winter coming, I'll be biking indoors so it won't be quite as long as I'm doing now but then I'm going to add swimming in. I'm going to try adding 1/2 cup of brown rice or whole wheat pasta with dinner tomorrow before my 40 mile bike ride on Sat and see how it goes. And I'll bring a bar to eat part way thru.

Just a heads up, he doesn't do any email. It would probably have to be over the phone.

I agree with Mom of Scooby - he really doesnt address endurance in the book , that is when it gets to be more indiviualized when you see himbut when i am in training for marathon or doing long runs - i do eat more carbs - healthy carbs always - no junk. I also eat more before my run, during and after my run. I dont worry about the calories i am consuming - i know i will burn it - but it is all healthy carbs. more Lean protein ideas: i also have found flank steak as a nice lean meat, marinade it in low fat Italian dressing all day then cook it med rare, slice at an angle - great taste, leftovers are great on top of a salad the next day or as a 2nd dinner!! ground turkey (93% or 99% fat free)is great mixed with canned diced tomatotes, i also add in salsa for heat - quick chili or yummy on top of some greens too like a taco salad i also use it in my chili make a frittata - use a couple of whole eggs & a bunch of whites (or egg subst), ton of cooked veggies, lowfat cheese, that can be 2 meals too(so many variations on this one) not protein but one of my favorites: roasted veggies - i live on this one, slice up a bunch of zuchinni, summer squash, red peppers, layer in a baking pan sprayed with PAM, spray veggies with PAM or olive oil, salt & pepper then cook at 450 for 30 mins, stirring twice i do a huge batch on Sunday nites and eat them all week at lunch &/or dinner, good for you and yummy, i sometimes add eggplant, mushrooms, onions - whatever i maybe have extra of in the house I find the more i plan ahead for all meals, the easier it is to stay on and more variety I can come up with .

The phone consult would be fine with me. I just can't make the drive on a regular basis. I'm going to try calling on my lunch break today. pwinkle-I'll try the flank steak, that would be a nice change from tuna or chicken on my salads. And the roasted veggies, I'm been doing the same thing except grilling them. I do squash, zucchini and mushrooms. Mix with balsamic vinegar and fresh basil. When it's really hot, I eat it cold and sometimes I add whole grain pasta to it.

Mom of Scooby - i started to train for the Maine Marathon in June but have had several set backs with injuries so i am still undecided. I ran it last year as my 1st marathon. I may do the 1/2 marathon instead. We have a relay team in it from work this year so that will be fun. Are you running the full marathon?i am signed up for the first Maine Coast 1/2 marathon - all women and 1 lucky guy in York - are you running that?? it sounds like fun !! another food idea guys - as a carb - eat Quinoa (sp?) it has protein in it, and so good for you !

I tried this once and thought it was horrible but I don't think I cooked it right. I printed some recipes from recipezaar.com and I'm going to try it again. The other meal I like a lot that is very filling is 1/2 cup brown rice over lettuce, tomato, add fat free sour cream, reduced fat mexican cheese, small amount of black beans & corn and salsa. Sometimes I'll add a serving of the organic blue corn chips.

I was thinking of the Maine coast as it sounded like fun, but I am going to be away a few days before on a college trip with my son, so not sure how that might turn out. A friend from work is running it, so I may decide to hop in at the last minute. I thought it was kind of pricey though. I am thinking of doing the Sportshoe. Right now the only other race I am commited to is the Portland Trails to Ale. I always like to support that cause.

We need an Eat to be Fit recipe thread! You guys have given me some great ideas about how to change things up a bit, although I've been pretty happy keeping things simple and easy.

Hey guys! I just talked to Mike on the phone. He does do long distance consulting by phone. He has some clients he's never even met but he prefers to do one appt in person and then do the followups by phone. I'm probably going to have to wait a bit due to finances but he gave me some advice and if it works for me, I might not even have to go. If I do, I'll plan it for a vac day and take a ferry ride or do something else while I'm up there. I think I'd also get more benefit out of it by waiting since what I'm doing is working right now, if I get to the point where it doesn't, then he can tweak it for me. Basically he said the same thing you two mentioned. Before a long ride/run, have some good carbs in the evening. At my current weight, during a long ride/run, I should have 100 calories every hour. He said I could have a Luna bar and maybe a gel or two. I think that will be better for me than trying to go without anything like I did on Sunday. By the time I got home I was starving and ended up not keeping track that day and just eating whenever I wanted. It was all good stuff but still may have been more than I needed.

hahaha, it's okay. I got some good advice on the first page.I'm curious, though: how does eating peanut butter right before a run help start the fat burning? And, if I do that independent of everything else, will it still work? (Honestly, I eat pretty well [v. little processed junk, though I have weak spots] and watch what I put in my mouth... diet plans to the extent you guys are talking about just aren't for me.)
