I have a friend who was in Russia during the Revolution of 88/89. He traded a case of Budweiser (probably from Poland) for a ride in a Hind helicopter He told me that Vodka bottles in Russia have tops like beer bottles here. Meaning that - like a convenience store - once they open, they never close, until they are empty.

Oh, plus, I drive through Berlin (NJ) at least twice a day, 7 days a week.In fact, my beer store is in Berlin. I used to go to the drive-in movies in Berlin (CT) when I was little, then go to McDonald's for hamburg-ers.

Okay, tell me, what German beer other than Löwenbräu do they sell in America? I think when I lived in the US I did not really pay attention. And are the German beers sold in the US made with the same purity as here in Germany? Interestingly enough, whenever I drank more than say 2 glasses of red wine in the US, I would wake with a headache. Not the case here. I think its great they cannot put sh$% in anything. I have to admit though, I cannot get used to seeing people having beer for breakfast. Weißwurst und Bier. Last year I was pregnant during Oktoberfest so I thought it would be a waste of time if I couldn't enjoy a beer. This year, my last year in Munich, I have to go!!

The same is true in Poland - they open the bottle and toss the top over their sholder. The bottle travels until empty.

Re: Oktoberfest...If I wanted to see a bunch of drunk Americans, I could go down to my local pub and see the exact same thing. So few, if any, self-respecting Germans spend any large amounts of time at the Weis'n... Like many other things, it has been Americanized... Nah, give me a good Bier, vom Fass, at a small, local brewery in Bavaria, with a pretzel the size of my head, and I will be a happy man.

From what I have been told, Oktoberfest is full of drunk Italians more than anything...Italians can drink all the wine in the world, but don't give them beer...So my German husband and friends say....In fact, the Italian police come for Oktoberfest too to take care of their out of control drunk citizens! The absolutely funniest thing about being an American living abroad is that I can spot an American 1 miles away. By their clothes, by their loud voices, by their white sneakers, by their backpacks...things you don't notice to be standard "American" until you have lived away for a while. I also like when Germans hear me speaking English with my American accent and think that I do not understand them if they talk about me!!

This thread rocks today, as it is so "diversely" focused on the surface yet completely connected. Must be the heat. Randymar is my hero of the day for throwing a beer at Barnaby! Mr Beave is reluctant to take me to hockey games because it makes me so aggressive, however I have not thrown a beer (yet). They cost too much to waste!LT: Beave's best friends are from Poland and stay with us often during the summer. They drink a lot of beer, and when they do,they lapse into Polish and other languages in midthought. After awhile, nobody notices anymore, and the conversations somehow flow. They drink only Canadian beer.

So, my father came to Germany in March. His second trip. I think he brought the worst clothes in his closet including his dirtiest baseball caps! Which he left on his head in resturants. That's just my Dad...its not a bad thing. But he did return naturally, with a Paulaner cap as well as a Hofbräuhaus hat!

Yes, Smartypants, we finally got a computer at home that is worthy of Comcast High-Speed internet; and not just a glorified typewriter.

Hello beer thread. Don't let me get you off topic (ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha).Actually, I have no beer related commentary. It's very hot here, and I took the day off from work. I can't really post from work much any more because things have changed (I'm not intentionally being vague, it's just too boring to get into.) We are buying Sam Adams these days, because we're poor, but I think I'm going to stop that because it's just stupid -- for a dollar more I could have something better. I really, really, try to buy something at the boozeterium that's cheap but I don't want any of it. I look the mainstream beers and I feel like, 'why bother?' It takes the fun out of it, like if I had to buy wine in a jug with a screw cap. (We did this once, as a kind of joke, but I suspect my drinking companion secretly hoped that it would be interchangeable, or at least, close to interchangeable with 'real' wine. It is not.)

That is the best thing I read all day......as well as RM's response. I wonder what the hospital staff thought. I almost stayed home.We had no power last night. Then my running watch alarm went off and wouldn't turn off.(I threw it out the side door)......

As long as we are rambling - are any of you mothers out there? I am on prednisone and swear this must be what it is like when pregnant. We too lost power last night. My first thought (as I lept out of bed) was - the ice cream must be eaten! I managed a pint and a half by candle light. This morning I found myself ordering a side of pickles with my iced coffee. I hadn't inteded to do that - it just came out. What does this have to do with beer - at least I can still drink beer on steroids. As for running - I don't plan to win any races so I'm safe for drug testing too.

That's what Floyd thought; he just forgot to lose. FWIW, I don't think he did. And we never found out what beer he drank the night before that epic Stage 17.

That's the kind of quick thinking we all need in emergencies. Kudos to you! I wish my power would go off. No, I don't actually. I have one air conditioned room and I've taken the day off from work and am lying in bed tapping on my spiffy new laptop with my dog and my cat sleeping next to me. I have three beers in the refrigerator, some cheese, and a willingness to make a grilled cheese, should circumstances require that I do so. I'm pretty much set for the rest of the day.

I did not want to eat anything when the power went out. As for the watch coming back, I rescued it. When things in the house urinate me off, they are flung out the side door: the remote has been out there, as has the elec can opener that opens sometimes and dumps its load other times. The Beave just sighs and hauls it back in.....the best was when I had the Kirby vacuum out there. We have little "technology" in our house.Add to that, it is pretty much unfinished. Think painted drywall, subflooring, etc. I just throw rugs and decorate around it all. Kind of like camping 365 days a year. But it is 100% paid for, so as we work toward being "debt free" (yeah, right, sure), we tolerate this hippie existence.Am pretty sure work knows I am in here a lot. Too hot to care. Not a mother,LT, but did miscarry several times. Preg is a total trip and a solo trip. My sister is on prednisone though, and has many weird symptoms.

D'Wife might have gender and role identification difficulties as she's always pointing at me and saying "You mother ...", especially when I'm beating her at Sorry.
