My trail run last night was serenaded by a concert that featured Ryan Cabrera and Ashlee Simpson. They sounded so awful away from the venue. Awful, out of tune....I used it to an advantage and pounded my workout. Didn't even stop for my usual post-run beer......my senses screamed to escape this god-awful singing as quickly as possible.
On a lighter note, there was a truck there that someone painted to look like a giant pita pocket. With slight alterations, said vehicle could easily be pornographic. Wished I had a picture of it....

See, I was afraid of this ... to New Yorkers, anything from New York is superior from anything from anywhere else, just BECAUSE it's from New York.

I had a bit of worry about trying Brooklyner Weisse, simply on the packaging alone ... the labels and boxes are GREEN!!! Bright Rolling Rock green!!! If Broolkyn hadn't already used the summery yellow and light blue pallette on it's Pennant Ale, it could have done so for the Weisse. I want my summer beers to LOOK summery. Sunny, happy, refreshing.

I seriously considered the possiblity that my eyes would over-rule my palate and say "This tastes like Rolling Rock" or "A very nice beer ... for Christmas-time!!!"

But I was okay, once I poured it into my glass and put the offending bottle in the trash.

Brooklyner Weisse pours a beautiful gold, with a sturdy white head to it. It's not as pale as the others ...

Just for clarity's sake, I am not going to differentiate between weisse, wit, wheat, hefeweizen, or blonde ale ... It's summer, it's hot, I'm thirsty and I'm not really in the mood to split hairs ... got it?

Good.

Let's move on ...

As I said, it's not as pale as the others, nor as cloudy. There's no yeast "sludge" at the bottom of the bottle (yeah, I retrieved it to check) I kinda LIKE the yeast sludge.

I didn't expect the smoky aroma that came up, I've gotten so used to bicycle shop. I still can't get around how it could have that smokiness and still be light in color??? That must be Garret Oliver's beer elves at work again.

Overall, Brooklyner Weisse is a good summer beer, but I would still pass it over for Circus Boy / Hocus Pocus, Sweatty Betty, or Whirlwind.

In light of a recent discussion with LT, I need to make a confession:

I have put beer from the garage in the freezer to chill it up a little quicker.

Only 10 minutes or so, not enough to F it up any (that I've noticed) but I know that it is wrong.

I confess to you, my brothers and sisters ...

Brooklyn's best beer, hands down, is their East India Pale Ale.

Their Weisse was always several notches below in my book...

Nice review. I just saw this beer locally. Now, I take umbrage with the "New Yorkers" allegation, as I think that only pertains to NYC. They think they are the whole state. I'd like for them to become their own state, personally....

Now, I confess as well: I have done the same as Randymar. I put beer in the freezer this week, for about 8 minutes, to chill it additionally. I also put ice in my glass. I also drank from a bottle......(head hanging in shame.....)

Sure is hot out.

Heck, at times I want to drink "conehead style" ala Saturday Night Live... don't even seperate the six pack...

No shame in that!

I am well over my shame now. Ran again last night at the theme park campground. While everyone camps IN something of some sort, be it tent, trailer, etc, the one constant seems to be beer. I saw it on every site after I made that discovery! Lots of Corona, and lots of Canadian beer, but that is because about 70% of the campers are Canadian.
Campground meals always smell terrific,too.
I decided I am voyeuristic. My running affords many of those opportunities.

Hey, while I'm busy transcribing the BEER volume; y'all can read this in the meantime:

Los Testigos de Cerveza

(The Witnesses of Beer)*

quote:
Not long ago—less than ten years—four travelers set forth on a voyage south of the border. While none of the voyagers journeyed to Central America for the same reasons, each held two common loves: travel and beer. Good beer, or so they thought in those heady days launching the craft beer revolution. This series tells the story of how those individuals—Nuco, Medio, Cap'n, and the BigGuy—evolved into one of the most well traveled, irreverent bands of craft beer lovers on earth, los Testigos de Cerveza.

* that's what BabelFish told me it said; LT may have a more colloquial translation. Ella habla español muy bien; mejor que podría siempre, muchas gracias.

Our office has set up a chocolate fountain today, with a huge array of edibles to poke into it. 4 women have been creating signs all morning to discourage "double dipping'. They have just made a PA announcement that feeding will commence.

All I can think of is that chocolate beer! I also have been thinking about sticking a dill pickle into the chocolate, for some perverse reason. At 3:31 today, I will be on vacation. I have my case of Victory beer all chilled and ready, and a new pint glass I won placing last week at a race. Can't wait to see what kind of beers they will have in the Chautauqua area!

Where the heck has RunMonkey been?

Opinions will surely vary. BBCS is a great beer, especially for winter time. But for anytime, for me, the East India Pale Ale is the ticket.

Remember, it's cool to disagree.

all I ever one is some damm clock...

Actually, its funnny you mention a new pint glass. White Labs has a give-back program. I just sent in 10 used vials and I get back some "free" glassware. Pretty cool.

Last I seen of RunMonkey was on the ciggarette thread. Hopefully she's still clean. Good luck monkey girl! throw that monkey from your back

I am using the glass because of Randymar. I usually drink from whatever the beer is in. They had 32 oz beers last night at the post race party! That race gave weird glasses that look pint-sized but had a handle. I came in 4th and did not get one.

Here, my running club buds rate races by beer. Last night's race was rated highly because of the size of beer, quantity of beer allowed, and dancing music. Because I must drive so far, I can't drink as much as they can. When I left, the guys were all dancing around a pedestal of empty giant beer cups.

Next month, there will be a race in a local skiing resort area, sponsored by a mt bike store called "Mud, Sweat & Gears".The race is using beers instead of gears. We may do that one because the next day is a 10 mile trail run. It's all about balance: running and beer.

As MikeMIlls once told me, you can enjoy stouts and porters in the summertime ... just jack your A/C way up!!!

RunMonkey's fine - LT and I are keeping an eye on her.

Oh and, for the record, I am not in the Michael Jackson Fan Club... In all my years of consuming and reading about all things beer, his opinions and mine just don't jive...

But again, it's cool...

Brooklyn Brewery Brooklyner Weisse - very nice review there.

Like the blind men and the elephant, New York has specific definitions to those from there. I find that those in the city believe that "New York" in Manhattan. Those in "Upstate New York" often cannot remember that the Catskills even exist or if they do are still set back in the '50s. And well as far as I can tell, Albany might as well be a Western MA annex.

IMHO - it is a wonderful and diverse state that provides many wonderful styles of beer.

My true confession - Genesee Cream Ale

LT again you hit the nail on the head with the Catskills comment. I know people that think the Catskills are still like Dirty Dancing era.

Genesee Cream Ale was what we drank as teens. We called the 16 oz bottles "screamers". It seems to be making a regional comeback. I live in the armpit of NY state. Say what you will about the area but it is a short drive to many great areas.

Anyone here ever make their own mead? I want to get my niece some intro stuff for Christmas, as she is very into the Renaissance stuff. She does not like beer at all.Thoughts?

Yeah, it's not like he's the Pope of Beer and his word is Gospel.

I've travelled up and down the NY Thruway enough times to know that New England extends to the guardrail on the Northbound lane.

There's a McDonald's in Plattsburgh, NY which has a picnic area on Lake Champlain.

I win ;-)
